I think its their way of getting you inside, despite the fact that nothing they have actually tastes like that smell.

I know what you mean I can barely walk past a subway without smelling that pizza smell and start craving pizza, but its the bread thats baking in the oven that gives off the aroma, especially the bread with the cheese on top of it i cant think of the name of it, but yeah.

The marinera sauce is made from the same basic ingredients as the sauce used in Pizza, that combined with the italian bread that is baked there and you will smell a pizza.

Subway bakes their own bread, also they use marinara sauce on their meatball subs, it's probably a combination of those two things.
