I see them around, and apparently, they're pretty good. I see them being sold as both 'export and non- export'. Which one is better? What years should I look for?

Leo Fender was a production engineer, who took care to design stuff that was easy to make properly. Any Fender or Squier Stratocaster, and a lot of pirate copies will be decent guitars, although you will probably get neater frets on an American or Japanese one. Most of the snobbery is just falling for sales puff.

I personally think that american made Stratocasters are the best, just because they are high quality, and made in the country the somewhat originated from. If you are going to buy a strat, look for an american made vintage 1975 Stratocaster. And non export are generally the best.

To my feeling when I played, the quality of the one sold in Japan is nice. (I am not sure the one exported to the US)
Fender Japan is more sophisticated. So is Ibanez. Compare the details.
but do not buy cheap one. Buy above US500.
