Over the last few years I've noticed a disturbing trend towards how men are treated and responses to things men say.
For instance, women can joke about how stupid and unnecessary men are, but if a guy makes any joke involving words like "kitchen", each nearby woman's ears will perk up and heads will turn.
The other day I was in a debate about equal treatment and I brought up the topic of rape, and the woman I was debating with said men shouldn't ever have a place for rape counseling because they never get raped and because they do all the raping.
Since when does that kind of attitude fly? Yet I brought that up to fellow-classmates and many sided with the girl.
There are laws discriminating against men, there are social standards for men still being enforced by both genders, and there's a huge gender bias in how our kids are taught and treated in school.

I believe in equal rights, but it's getting ridiculous now. Men can't do anything without being afraid of legal repercussions.

Men get raped. Particularly in jail. The numbers are astounding. I don't have a clue what your friend is speaking of. The places I have worked/volunteered over the years take in both men and women who are the victim of sexual violence.

The thing you are missing in your discussions and arguments above are the particulars of any situation and the balance of power when they are enacted. (REGARDLESS OF WHAT YOU BELIEVE) the reason affirmative action for anyone, essentially making them a protected class and giving them opportunities artificially, is based on past and current discrimination. You can argue it is wrong but that is the basis. So for instance, 30 years ago women were rarely admitted to Law School and anyone of color suffered the same fate in the Southern part of the US. In order to counter the racism and sexism that existed to make the playing field unlevel affirmative action (laws protecting and promoting minorities and women) were enacted. Women are doctors, lawyers, business owners, etc. today. There is some equality at the lowest levels. There is still residual barriers for women at the highest levels. They are not CEOs, they are not on boards, they are not 50% of the US Senate or Congress. They are the exception not the rule. This will be eradicated in 30 years as the younger generations move up.

Women often make jokes about men being unnecessary on these boards but just as many women and men refer to women as Wh*** (that is what ho is short for), Pu***, nice pieces of **S, etc. The latter is just as sexist as the former.

You sound young and idealistic. I think perhaps in your world there are equalities between the sexes and some of this makes no sense to you. But that does not mean your women friends' mothers and grandmothers are stuck in middle management or can't go shopping alone without permission from their husbands. Assuming that the sexes are equal across the board today is a little optimistic and naive.

I don't know why it exists and I don't know why some fools seem to think it's acceptable, but until we are able to treat everyone equally regardless of the shape, color, or age of their skin we will never be truly equal.

I make an effort to point out the hypocracy to my children everywhere I see it -- to suggest to them that they replace the male (or white person or old, fat, disabled, etc) person in the joke with the current "protected" class and then see if it is still acceptable. If you can't make the replacement and still think it's all right, they you shouldn't accept it.

Of course, this eliminates 90% of all television programs, commercials, movies, and magazine ads... but I have to believe that the tide will turn eventually and people will come to their senses. To say that it's all right to make fun of men, for example, just because they used to make fun of women makes us no better than the worst of them. I like to think I'm above that, and I believe that most people are also -- but, of course, the idiots are usually the ones that get the stage.

Have faith - it will self-correct eventually as long as there are smart people of all shapes and colors who used their intellect instead of their baser instincts.

It's called using the master's tools to tear down the master's house. It's a form of feminism in which females use the tricks and techniques men used to take their power in order to regain it. But I agree with you. It doesn't work. Bitterness and misunderstanding never really solve problems.
Men get raped, and men can get insulted by jokes too. Why it is socially acceptable is beyond me? I love the men in my life and would never make or laugh at any such jokes without defending them.
What I would suggest is to calmly and politely point out the double standard and defend your sex in a way that doesn't belittle the other one next time someone gets in this argument with you. It's not that women shouldn't have rights, but trying to get them in a hostile way just isn't going to work.

Stupid things are always socially and politically correct for the times when enough people allow it and believe in it. Thats why 90% of Americans once hated blacks and it was acceptable. Looking forward to seeing what other dumb stuff society allows and favors in the future.

And for the record, that girl you said who believe guys don't get raped would change her mind if her future child-teenage boy got raped. And men do get raped in jail, and not all of them deserve it.

Also, ofcourse other females will side with her, people don't usually make judgements on whats right or wrong, they make it on sheer emotion and what ever makes them feel good. Then they justify it by trying to give a reason that usually has no leg to stand on.

The real question is what movement has created this attitude. The answer is, of course, feminism. The media pushes it...look at how men are treated on TV commercials, for example. Sitcoms are another good example. People believe that stuff and push it on others without realizing it, and we soon have a social opinion on something...never mind that it's irrational, stupid, and equally as bad as the reasons feminists give for having such an opinion.

Nobody said that misandry is socially and politically correct.

Yes, men also get raped, though much less often than women, and by whom?

I also agree there are laws discriminating men, but who usually makes the laws?

And what do you consider by "anything"?

Anyone saying that men don't get raped is ignorant. Rape is a crime of sexual violence and it can happen to anyone. Statistically speaking, women or transgendered people are more likely to get raped than men, but men certainly do get raped (even outside of jail). And, just as anyone can be raped, anyone should have access to legal counseling. Perhaps experiencing rape as a man and as a woman are very different, but that certainly does not mean it is not traumatic. Same applies for any kind of sexual abuse.

As for social standards for men bring reinforced by both genders - isn't that the case for EVERYONE? You cited popular culture for how men are treated, and that is valid. Where do we learn what is acceptable if it is not in the popular culture? Perhaps men are treated poorly in the media, but what are you referencing specifically?

I suppose I am thinking mainly of printed media and advertisements when I say that (especially in print media), probably 98% of the time a woman is used for advertising. One of the most ridiculous examples is from a free newspaper in Phoenix, AZ. There was an ad for car audio systems. The picture in the ad was a room with some car audio equipment and a woman just standing there in a bikini. Another ad was for a bar/grill. The theme of the establishment was Scottish or kilts or something along those lines - what was used in the ad but a woman in a rather suggestively shortly cut kilt. Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't kilts traditionally for men? The only time I have seen men used in an ad has been in a magazine or ads that targeted gay men. I also have a joke which caters to this:
Q: What is the difference between men's and women's magazines?
A: There are none - they both have pictures of sexy women on the front.

It has been incredibly rare that I see a man in advertising. What is even rarer is to see a man used sexually in advertising. I do not watch much TV, so I can't really speak to that.

As for women being able to joke about men but men not being able to joke about women: isn't it the same way for white people and people of color? It is considered poor taste for a white person to make a joke about a stereotype of an ethnic or racial group where as it isn't that poor taste if someone of color makes a joke about white people? It's thought of as OK for people with a disability to make a joke about people with able bodies but not the other way around? Same for people who are gay with people who are straight?

I believe it is reflective of a greater pattern. Traditionally, the group which is dominant is infallible and it is therefore ineffective to make jokes about them because there isn't much to make fun of. Then, the non-dominant group is therefore fallible and open to tons of jokes because they are not dominant. Let's take homosexuals and heterosexuals into this example since it has very little to do with the topic. How many gay jokes can you think of? And how many straight jokes can you think of? Chances are, you will be able to more easily find more gay jokes than straight jokes. In this case, straight is the dominant group and therefore infallible. Gay is the subordinate group and therefore fallible. I don't know that I can offer a better explanation than that - we have a clear cuts groups and roles for the groups. This can not really be refuted very well, and if it is, is is most likely a moral judgement. We have an obvious dominant, or normative group, straight people, and an obvious non-dominant, or non-normative group, gay people. Who gets more sh*t, in short? And who had to take more sh*t for a minor facet of their identity? Gay people or straight people?

Now, if we take this idea and take away the specifics (gay and straight), we can apply that to many situations. It can be applied to men and women. Men are the infallible, dominant group. I don't believe that this can be very easily refuted from a non-personal standpoint. Of course each *man* might not be dominant, but, if we reference popular culture once again, it is not men who are used to sell things, it is not men who are viewed as not capable of working outside the home, it is not men who are culturally told to make themselves pretty and attractive so people will like them. Women are the fallible, non-dominant group. Of course, each *woman* might not be non-dominant, but, if we reference popular culture once again, it is women who are used to sell things, it is women who's bodies are objectified and medically ignored, it is women who are told that they are not thin enough, too fat, too smart, too stupid, too etc., it is women are who might meet resistence if they leave the house to work.

The reversal of this logic is not useful, either. It makes the person attempting to reverse the logic sound defensive and non-credible. (Let's say for a second that women are the dominant group and men are the non-dominant group: There has yet to be a woman (or person of color) to be president. In many states, women must fight for rights to health care for their bodies. While it is antiquated, "Mrs." and "Ms." show that a woman is defined by her status with a man, while "Mr." tells us nothing about a mans status. If women WERE the dominant group, would these examples even exist?)

Finally, there are two things which I don't know if I understand what you mean. First is "there's a huge gender bias in how our kids are taught and treated in school." The second is, "Men can't do anything without being afraid of legal repercussions." Can you just explain a little bit more of what you meant by these statements?
