i have a 2002 pontiac grandam 4 cyl, in order for my heat to come on i have to turn the the switch to # 4, sometimes it come on when i turn it to #3, same thing with the air condition

Ya bad switch, you can get a used one cheap and install it yourself. Go to a wrecking yard that allows you to pull out the old one so you can break theirs and know how to do it right on yours

If you mean that there is no air flow with the switch on # 1, 2, or 3 then it is possible the "resistor block"[as the name says - controlls the speed of the blower motor by resistance]has failed. Speed #4 is not contolled by the resistor block so not affected if it fails. This block is usually located in the "heater box" [cooled by the air flow] it can be purchased from your local parts store

This sounds like a poor ground at the switch. Or a loose conection at the conection to the switch. Last, it is possible the slower speeds setting are burn`t out.

Blower motor resistor located by the blower motor in the heater box

Give your mechanic $800 & he will fix it.
