I'm looking for maybe a top three and then your choice for number 1 and why? Try to explain your definition of capitalist so that answers can compare.

Why do I ask - I'm fascinated by the success / failure of economic systems and I'm interested to explore how improvements can be made to current economic systems.

United States of America.

No socialised medicine, no equal funding of education. Keep the poor, poor and make the rich richer.

Unfortunately, it is an example of rather bad capitalism, for it is all about self, self, self. A good capitalist society retains the principles of capitalism, but ensures that society takes care of those who cannot take care of themselves.

I'm a capitalist, by the way, but with a social conscience.

Mardy may find this useful, although not a measure of pure capitalism, it is a measure of the ease of doing business in a country - and New Zealand comes out on top. http://www.doingbusiness.org/documents/DoingBusines2006_fullreport.pdf

The following link also has some very good resources if you need to research the question of capitalism further. http://markhumphrys.com/capitalism.html

Sounds like an interesting project. You can look up the definitions yourself!
I was trying to find comparative health care costs, to individuals in different parts of the world, but it's far to much hassle, I received two replies to my posted question.
That's the bit of capitalism that I am concerned about. USA is without doubt the biggest capitalist state, and as I was researching my little project I was shocked to see that almost 50% of Americans don't have enough cover to get by on.
I am from the UK, and while the Health service is not free (the workers are deducted money from salary) medical services are free to all young and old, working or not, the elderly have paid their money while working.
Perhaps you could incorporate this aspect of capitalism into your project?
I find it almost inhuman that anyone in the Western world is refused medical care on the grounds of being poor. Yes I do know that a very basic service is given in the USA to those who cant afford the full treatment required. I just couldnt believe what I was reading, check it out for yourself, just type USA medicare into your search engine.
Good luck with your project, I gave mine up in disgust.

actually it is Hong Kong - most of the public instrumentalities are partially privately owned, and income tax is a flat 16%

Since 1970, Hong Kong has ranked as the world's freest economy. In the just released Economic Freedom of the World, 2004 Annual Report, Hong Kong remains number one. The report, published by The Fraser Institute in conjunction with the Cato Institute and other think tanks around the world, ranks countries on their adherence to a set of policies that measure the degree of economic freedom. Those countries that safeguard property rights, enforce contracts, allow free trade, maintain low marginal tax rates, ensure sound money, and limit the size and scope of government will score well on the Economic Freedom of the World (EFW) index.

Out of a possible score of 10 on the EFW index, Hong Kong achieved 8.7; Singapore came in a close second at 8.6; while New Zealand, Switzerland, Britain, and the United States tied for third with a score of 8.2. (There is a two-year lag in the data, so those scores are for 2002, not 2004.)

USA first and then UK. Because almost everything is privatised, including social security and health, education, monuments, and other social and cultural aspects.
