Sorry to disilusion all the dreamers but the word hippy means to me the following:

In the swinging 60's:

The BBC created the hippy and nowaday's they try to spread the rumour that we were all drug taking groupies, in truth the majority of people had to leave school at 14 to get a job to help the family budget.

The only people that were hiipy's were from the rich who could afford to go to unniversity.
Unniversity was a word from another planet to the majority, who were just about able to afford a school blazer(secondhand)

The true facts are:

We went out to Mod event's at Clacton Southend and liked Georgie Fame, the Beatles etc.

Hippy's were never in the majority, drugs were heard of but never seen.

Hippy's were from the RICH and able to dream dreamers.

They were able to be hippy's because we worked to pay for unniversities that created people like gordon Brown Tony Blair etc

So BBC tell the truth

Yes I agree. You are spot on and it just goes to show how much influence the government and media have over us. The rubbish they printed in papers and showed on the t.v has been enough to still influence our way of seeing hippies even for people nowadays that aren't old to remember the 60s/70s. Look at the punks, people were terrified of me when I was a teenager in 1979 and I've never hurt anyone in my life! People believed what they read in the papers.

The Hippy`s came in the late 60`s to the UK ,They sort of filled a void after the Mods & Rockers,
I knew a lot of Hippy`s They were all flower power Peace and love types,Drugs ! Never heard of it ,Red VP wine was the order of the day. As for coming from the wealthy classes ,I would say it was more the opposite .
The Mods and Rocker fraternity progressed into cars for transportation ,The hippy`s did not seem to have the funding to do that . Cant say i ever knew a Hippy with a car.
Anyway that was Bournemouth in the 60`s Mayby different to other parts of the UK.

well i lived through this time and saw real hippy types. i guess i was a young hipster.university of california at berkley is where it got started. i figure that the hippy movement began in the late 40s and met its peak in the late 60s although there are the long haired type today.a hippy is a pot smoking ,longer haired, free love type that will not be seen again.those that were hippies have aged and either have worked their way into a high paying coporate position or are living in poverty and homeless.

Putting the word 'Hippy' onto a person, I would consider them to be a nature loving pot smoking person.
Someone who was comfortable with who they were, but still tried to hide from people behind drugs.
Into the swinging side of things. The would have their own dreams but set out to acomplish nothing.
If they could clean up their act, they could take the whole world by storm.

Dontcha just hate it?
I'm sure there are lots of people out there like me, who think they were born either just too early or just too late to experience it.
We swapped girlfriends/boyfriends (read - in the most intimate way) and experimented with the marry-ju-arna thing long enough to find out that we didn't like it (this normally took one toke on a spliff followed by a dreadful headache coupled with puking in the morning).
Look, it happened - but it's rapidly entering the realms of "the good old days" for us old farts.
I doubt that you can lay all the blame on the BBC.

I agree. I'd class modern hippies to be the likes of Chris Martin from Coldplay, or that guy from Kula Shaker (Crispin Mills?).

Darn- and I always thought the word is H-I-P-P-I-E, not the one related to the anatomy.
Hippy means - a bit chubby in the hip area.

Sigh.
