Hi all. I'm just a little curious really. Dont ask me how but I actually managed to get confused with the date of my dating scan and I missed the appointment. Therefore, I have had to re-schedual another appointment. I will now be approx 15 weeks when i go for the scan. Is this still too early to determine the sex of the baby or do you reckon they might tell. Just curious thats all. thanks x

just for those of u that dont know. In the uk we have a scan at about 12 weeks to tell u more accurately how far you are in your pregnancy. This allows the midwives to carry out the correct tests on time.

I think it will be down to luck. If it will be a boy then the clitoris will be forming into a penis - if this is advanced enough then they will be able to tell that it is a boy. To determine whether or not it is a girl they will be looking to see if it has any ovaries and I think that 16 weeks would be too early.
You should have another scan at 20 weeks (if you are in the UK) which may be able to tell you more. However, not only do many babies not co-operate (my daughter had her legs crossed the whole time) also many hospitals simply wont tell you.
If you are desperate to know the sex and have a few spare hundred pounds around you could have one of those amazing 3D or 4D scans. A link is below.

Yes it is too early to tell.
You will have a scan between 20 and 24 weeks where they can tell the sex a bit easier however this isnt fool proof either. Little boys and girls look almost the same on scan pics unless you can see the little boys penis. which from below normally isnt possible.
If you have the money the best thing to do would be to go for a 4d scan when you are about 30 weeks or more, the baby has grown more then and you also get to see what your baby actually looks like! its amazing and well worth the money.

A baby's sex can be seen on ultrasound starting at about 18 to 20 weeks, but not all babies co-operate with the scan! Your baby has to be in a position to allow the scan operator to see the male or female parts.
And mistakes can be made even if people do get a good view of the baby's sex -- there are no guarantees. I recommend leaving the price tags on all the pink or blue clothes you buy or receive until you see the real parts!

yeah it is still a bit to early i would say and they dont normally tell you at the dating scan cause i had one when i was 14 weeks +5 days and i asked and they said it was still too early they will tell you at the 20 week anomonoly scan but some sonographers are reluctant to tell you! i asked at the 20 week scan and they said it looks like a boy so i wanted to know like nearly 100% so i had a private gender scan at 24 weeks and they confirmed he was a boy! but congrats on the pregnancy and hope all goes well good luck xx

I went for a 16 week scan and was told I was having a boy. They were spot on! I'm sure they will be able to tell! :) The element of suprise is good though! Are you sure you want to know?? I didn't find out with my second pregnancy, and it was really exciting to have a surprise! Good luck with everything!

you cannot tell the sex of the baby untill about 20 weeks and even then it is still difficult to determine, I have seen babies born at 22 weeks and their genitailia is somewhat difficult to distinguish at first glance. Your scan is not for sexing the child but to see growth and to check to see if your child has any organ abnormalities and to see if your due date coincides with the measurement of your baby. Good luck.

I found out that I was having a boy (almost 2 years ago) at 14 weeks. I was having some complications & sent for a scan & they were able to tell. Had a few more afterward that confirmed.

Possibly, it depends on if the baby is in the right postion, and also, some hospitals won't tell you. I think that you should call the ultrasound department of the hospitall you are going to and ask them, then you won't be waiting for weeks getting excited about finding out then realising you won't be able to know after all.
Good luck for your pregnancy :)

You never know you might be able to tell the sex but some midwives/hospitals don't like to tell you as one got sued for telling parents the sex and it didn't come out the sex exspected

From what I was told (over 20 years ago) these could be determined between 17 and 19 weeks...so yeah 15 weeks is a bit early according to what I was told.
