I did not backpack but I traveled through Europe.

Advice; keep the traveling to a minimum. I stayed in decent hotels and had nice places to sleep and was still miserable spending so much time on trains and flying. I guess a good way to get around this would be to travel small distances at a time. No matter what you do, don't plan on seeing Paris, Amsterdam, Rome, and Madrid all in 2 weeks.

Backpacking is awesome, but be prepared to carry that heavy thing. I know it sounds ridiculous but if you are going to be carrying a heavy pack take walks with it beforehand so you can get used to it. Also, get some comfortable walking shoes and wear them in while your getting used to the bag.

Don't be afraid of people, but be very weary of them. There are so many nice people I met while I was over there, but all it takes is one scumbag to ruin your trip. Luckily, I did not run into that one scumbag.

If you have any other or more specific questions, by all means feel free to ask through e-mail. Good luck on your trip, it is an awesome experience.

Travel light to start with ...in Holland and Germany...i know this for sure...there are places to arrange rides for hitchhikers (liftcentrale)...so you say when you want to go somewhere, they have a database with people traveling from a to b and want to take someone with them for probably half the cost of petrol....those folk are registered so you won't get in a car with a creep... That can save a lot of money on travel cost... In big cities...get rid of your backpack as soon as so you can blend in...don't behave like a victim i.e. be insecure/lost...don't buy drugs on the streets in amsterdam...there are shops for that....Europe has a lot of history as you know so plenty to see...happy traveling...oh and don't fly at Xmas as Al Quaida has planned bombings as we are in a war now...thanx to your president and his asslicking friends here in Europe...
