The original "Funny Cars" started showing up at the Drag Strip in the mid-1960's as Altered-Wheelbase Cars and given the NHRA designation "A/FX" (A - nitro methane fuel / FX - factory experimental). The name "Funny Car" comes from the comments about these altered-wheelbased cars, as both axles are moved forward, "there's something funny about that car!". Thus the name not coming from HA-HA, but rather, Odd, Peculiar, Strange, or Different. Glad they went with "Funny". The evolution of this class quickly went to tubular framed chassis fitted with a fiberglass replica car body that could quickly be removed for easier between round maintenance. Also the knick-name "Floppers" has been used, as you would start the engine with the body in the up position, then "Flop" the body down for Racing. The designation F/C does not mean Funny Car, but "Fuel Coupe", as in AA/FC, A/FC, BB/FC, TA/FC, or EA/FC. A - means it uses Nitro Methane as fuel, B - means it uses Methanol as fuel, single letter means the car is normally aspirated injected, double letter means the engine is supercharged (including turbocharging), TA means Top Alcohol, EA means Econo-Altered. This is the meaning of designations and a brief History, the current set up is well described above.

Funny cars race in two different classes TA/FC Top Alchol Funny Car and AA/FC Nitro Funny Car.The differences are many but to surmise it All Funny Cars are custom built 125 inch wheelbase the distance between the center of the front wheel to the center of the rear wheel chassis with a replica of a popular car body made either out of fiberglass or carbon fiber mounted to the chassis. THE DIFFERENCES TA/FC cars run on methanol alchol fed into a custom made racing engine aprox 526 cubic inches most are hemi types but some teams do use a wedge type and have one distributor firing eight spark plugs and use either a roots style or a screw type supercharger and have either a 2 or 3 speed transmission shifted by air pressure activated by the driver using buttons mounted to the steering wheel at a preset rpm indicated by a light that lights up at the preset rpm TA/FC cars leave the starting line at full throttle and the rear spoiler is a simple design sometimes nothing more than a single strip aprox 3 inches tall and aprox a foot long mounted behind the rear window TA/FC cars cover the quarter mile in about six seconds at or about 225 mph TA/FC cars consume aprox 4-6 gallons of fuel per run fuel is fed through nozzles mounted under the injector scoop and they create aprox 2500 hp.AA/FC cars use a 500 cubic inch max custom made hemi type racing engine with a roots type supercharger and two distributors firing 16 spark plugs AA/FC cars run on a mixture of 85- 90 percent nitromethane and 10-15 percent methanol alchol fed to the engine via nozzles mounted under the injector scoop, nozzles mounted under the supercharger and nozzles mounted into the cylinder head spraying directly into the combustion chambers and the motor consumes aprox 25-35 gallons of fuel mixture per run AA/FC cars do not have a transmission whatsoever it's high gear only direct drive and the rear spoiler on a AA/FC car is a complex multi element type that creates downforce to help plant the rear tires to the track.Another comparison a TA/FC costs about $1000.00 to $2500.00 per run if no parts are damaged but a AA/FC costs between $12,000 to $15,000 per run if no parts are damaged and TA/FC cars only require minor routine maintanence between runs where as a AA/FC requires that the entire car be torn Down the bare frame and rebuilt after every run.

Highly modified unibody drag cars. The differ from pro-stock in that there is actually an enclosed monocque body shell with the engine positioned in front of the drive. They use supercharged methanol V-8s with three-thousand plus horsepower.
