They said it was $2000 for labor and $2000 for materials. When you quote a price, labor is total...not per man...right? Then he started lying about who made the price and blamed a third associate. In today's paper, this same man was convicted (front page local paper) of fraud in mortgages.
So (1) Is labor total and not by the man?
(2) Is he milking me for money because he's such a fraud?
(3) He owed them $10,000...is that when the price went up?
(4) What do you think?

I say "they" when I talk about hiring them.
I say "he" when I talk about the price going up! He said the other man's wife had quoted a price. But she and I say she doesn't quote prices on our deals. This is the third time I hired the husband. The "crook" is the new guy. I had not dealt with him. The married couple had never given me this type of trouble.

If you had a witness this would be better but, you pay the Price that was quoted, then you tell them you'll go to small claims court if necessary. the judge will have a good idea what the prices and the quotes were and are. This is a scam that's been going on for some time and, will continue. Hire a competent carpenter from the union, pay the price and get a contract, it's far cheaper in a long run then the hassle you'll get from people like this.

Don't pay anything more than what you agreed to pay. The only thing they can do is file a Lien against your home. When or if they do that then you can sue them for filing an unperfected lien and get reimbursed for court cost and damages. In the future hire only people you know or discover through your local Better Business Bureau. If they do not belong to the BBB then there is a reason. Be sure to get everything in writing, even if you write it and have them sign it. I have customers that do that to me and I am never offended. If it pisses them off then they are hiding something.

In my experience Labor and material has always been 50/50 for total job. NOT labor per man. Stick to your first quote. Someone is trying to get more money out of you. I'd find a new carpenter.

When they quote you a price for material & labor, that is the price. Not per man. Hopefully you had a contract. Never hire a contractor without having one. They are scammers.

Just pay what was quoted and pay with a check, noting on the check,'payment in full'. They will no doubt accept it ,they know to get the rest they would have to go through the courts. With his history I don't think he wants to face the judge. Next time get a WRITTEN BID detailing the work , a firm price, and terms of payment. Also check references new and old as possible.Signatures of his and yours are a must.

Sounds like the old Abbot and Costello stick of "who's on first". If they quoted you a price, then that's the price. If nothing is on paper regarding the first bill, then write them a check for 2000.00 and tell them to sue you. You are under no obligation to change the original bid just as they were under no obligation to do any extra work. My contractor tried to charge me for work that was included in the original bid. It was work that totalled more than 10,000.00. I told him to "go fish" and that was the end of it.

Im confused, at first you talked about they said this and they said that. Then you said he.
If the men you spoke to gave you a price and then after the job is done said someone else told them the wrong price then it is the workers fault and not yours.
Most quotes should be put in writing just to be safe.

no longer basically that, yet there is 6.4 billion income SS precise now and it is is definitely and thoroughly shield for the subsequent 25 years AND it has no longer something to do with the present financial issue we are in. it is basically a rip-off to those who desire to eliminate it, and people who desire to eliminate it are human beings desire it privatized. Privitization is the present cry from all those government hating people who've been dumbed down by potential of the pundits they hear too. If SS have been privatized (that would propose making an investment your individual money in Wall highway) each individual who's now retired and each individual approximately to retire would have not any money to outlive. the clarification issues like SS have been introduced approximately interior the 1st place replaced into through fact government mandatory to guard the persons from the genuine rip-off artists who would thieve their money.

I wouldn't give them any more. I hope you got something in writing. If not, learn from this!
I had a friend who contracted a driveway and paid the contractor for the concrete, only to find out the contractor didn't pay for it. The concrete company put a lien on his house, which is legal.
