There are a lot of reasons and the best one is he doesn't understand. He doesn't understand how much it means to you.
Another possible reason is because he thinks you might starve because selling books won't support you. He wants the best for you and he doesn't think being a writer is the best path for you.

Well, being a writer is not easy, but if it is a really you vocation - just follow it. Remember that the life stories of such great writers as Moliere were not always bright. He refused to live a convinient life and be an upholsterer of royal court and started writing his plays. Even then when everybody accused him in lack of talent he still carried on. It is happening nowdays too. Read a biography of Ohran Pamuk and you will see that road to recognition is not easy. I wish you best of luck and forgive your dad.Our parents want only best for us.

I guess many parents had their children's lives pre-planned the moment they were born.
Perhaps he doesn't think that its a "real" job. I've known lots of people whose parents had a hard time accepting their professions.
I agree with everyone else that he probably doesn't think that you could make enough money to support yourself (like, say, a doctor).
Talk things out with him. He'll come around sooner or later.

take some time and talk to ur father about ur desire to become a writer.he will surely understand u.The reason for him not supporting u to become a writer may be he wants u to bcome someone great other than a writer in future.

You should take a stand and tell him be like you know what dad you may be my dad but if you don't support what i love to do then dad you and me are going to have problems or you should be like dad and talk to him and maybe he'll come through.

Who cares what your Dad thinks? You are probably young. When you get a bit older you start to care less and less about what your parents think. Tell him "at least I'm not knocked up." He'll think about it and feel better about your writing.

Tell him how much the job means to you and it's better than not having a job at all and still living in their house.

He probably doesnt want you to be some penniless Bohemian. Prove that it can pay the bills and it will allay his skepticism.

You could be leaving out some important details, but I think there's a good chance your dad is a moron. If he is, don't listen to him.
