While I can appreciate the in depth answer that First. gave & he is definitely right on some points don't let that thinking just make you rule out Soc. I took many of the lengthy & expensive tests that are suppo'st to tell you what major &/or career you are suited for & I matched up perfectly with Sociology. I love debate and really having to think things out and Soc presents so many large scale ideas that it's very fascinating to me. I went to the University where Applied Sociology was developed and not only was the faculty great but it was a smaller department so I got to be more hands on & active in leadership positions as well as get to know personally many of the students in my major. So many people get Art & Science degrees that employers don't just write them off nowadays like they may have used to. I do highly suggest unless you want to do something focussed like Social Work (which is a different program all together anyway) that you pair your Soc degree with another major or minor that is going to be in something useful to employers in conjunction with Soc like perhaps business, econ, mngmt, or marketing. I am only a few years out of college & it took a while but I now have a lucrative job in the business world. My 2 minors were Marketing & Poli Sci. I paired this with an insane amount of orginizational leadership positions and volunteer work to show I wasn't just taking the easy road. I think your leadership and involvement will overcome whatever negative thinking an employer may have about you with your Soc degree. I actually was brought onto my current team because of my advanced understanding of people both for our market demographic & for being able to understand employees & helping with their training. Most people don't end up in the fields that their degrees were in anyway so something like Soc & Psych are very maleable & useful when it comes to the Business world.
