I believe what makes a great president are a combination of extremely good ethics and a well defined understanding of the human factor involved in such great responsibility.

The president who uses these best has worked towards balancing National domestic needs and International good will.

As selected by the Democrats, and leading the list for best President since 1945 is Ronald Reagan.

Surprisingly, the same is true of the Republicans. They considered him over Abraham Lincoln. See list:
Poll Results: Which Republican President Was Best?
Abraham Lincoln 34.69%
Teddy Roosevelt 16.33%
Calvin Coolidge 6.12%
Herbert Hoover 0 0%
Dwight D. Eisenhower 0 0%
Richard Nixon 2.04%
Gerald Ford 0 0%
Ronald Reagan 36.73%
George HW Bush 2.04%
George W Bush 2.04%

Of course there are those in Princeton who think George Bush is the best...I guess they don't follow the news.

Anyway, as a Canadian, it was President Clinton and President Franklin D. Roosevelt who impressed me the most.

I think it is close between Washington and Lincoln. In The end I think Washington because It is he who defined the structure of the Executive branch of government. This achievement was momentous and much less publicized. Remember he was the first president and the constitution only outlined very loosely the power and structure of the presidency. . the development of the cabinet system was his legacy to future generation and is still in use today over 200 yrs later. Washington also was wise enough to champion along with Madison and Hamilton a stronger view of the federal govt. that enable the union to operate as a whole and not a sum of it's parts. So when I look at who was the greatest President I have to look at who did the best job and who had the most enduring impact on the office. No Other president had as an enduring impact as Washington which should tell you what a good job he really did in establishing the office. Now some 200+ yrs later the only Major change made in the basic structure of the executive was the introduction of term limits in the 1940's. and that my friends is why I deem him the greatest.

for discussion I would rate the top five presidencies as
1. Washington
2. Lincoln
3. Jefferson
4. FDR
5. Regan/Teddy Roosevelt
Now if you have to pick by party that eliminates all the presidents prior to Lincoln on the republican side so by party it might look something like this
Republican
1. Lincoln
2. Regan
3 Teddy Roosevelt
4. William Taft
5.Dwight Eisenhower/ Calvin Coolidge
The Modern Democratic party Despite claims to the contrary started with the presidency of Andrew Jackson this again eliminates Washington and Jefferson so that would leave
1. FDR
2. Woodrow Wilson
3. JFK
4 Bill Clinton
5. Harry Truman

The best Presidents of the Democratic party were FDR and Kennedy. There are no best modern-day Presidents of the Republican party but Abraham Lincoln is far and away the best Republican President ever.

It had to have been Ronald Reagan. He won presidency by a landslide and he spoke to the people. Sure, he had a lot of heat because he was an actor, but that was just a stereotype. Everyone loved him because his wants were for the people of America. Not America.
