Did the US try and buy california prior to the Mexican War?

The US only made a purchase near the Arizona/New Mexico border---the Gadsen purchase. California was fought for to fulfill the "Manifest Destiny" idea that the U.S. should have all of the land from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
