I drive around New Mexico a lot. Mostly highways, but occasionally need 4 wheel drive to drive on Navajo reservations with dirt roads. My main concern is gas milage. Would a Suburu Outback or Forester be a good choice?

I know you said inexpensive, but if you can get into a Hummer H3 - the gas mileage for me is running about 20 mpg. Beginning in 2007, you should be able to get a used one for a decent price.

Have the 4x4 equipment and kit ratios thoroughly checked and if there's a situation hit the broking up below the Lemon regulation. Now then, the engine makes a huge diffrence...I surely have been instructed via 2 mechanics do no longer via avert or Chrysler if the engine length ends up in a 7. Like a 4.7 L. I surely have a pal with a team cab 4x4 2003 dakota. It has an motor vehicle trans and a 5.2 Magnum (it extremely is the 318 magnum) and he gets 22 miles to the gallon towing a 5th wheel in 2 wh force on the open street.

The Subarus are not true 4X4s. Look at the Kia Sportage and Sorento. Both are built on real truck frames and have plenty of ground clearance. They get around 27-35 mpg depending on terrain, speed, use of 4wd,etc.They are also quite affordable and come w' 10 yr 100000 mile warrenty.
