Validate the USB cable has been connected properly to the laptop.

The Desktop Manager MUST BE OPEN with the status "Connected" to allow communications over the USB connection from the computer to the handheld.

Setting up and making the Connection:

Configure network settings in Windows XP.

CreaAccess Device Manager.
Click the + sign next to "Ports" and ensure "RIM Virtual Serial Port" is present.
NOTE: The name of the RIM port on each computer may vary, remember or write the name of your RIM port down.

Click Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options.
Click the Modem tab.
Highlight "Standard Modem" and click Add.

Install New Modem appears, check "Don't detect my modem, I will select it from a list".
Select Next.

Select Standard Modem Types under Manufacturer, then scroll to bottom of the Models list and select 56000 bps Modem.
NOTE: If receiving "Hardware Failure Error 692", from the Models list select 33600 bps Modem, rather then 56000 bps Modem.
Select Next.

A number of ports will be made available for selection, select the name of the port from step 1.
Select Next.

Select Finish.

Click Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options.
Highlight Standard 56000 bps Modem COM4 and click Properties.

Click Advanced tab.
Enter AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","isp.cingular"
Select OK.

If RIM virtual COM port is missing perform a clean uninstall and reinstall the software.

Close Desktop Manager.
In the Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
In the list of currently installed programs, select BlackBerry Desktop Software 4.0.1.
Click Change/Remove.
Select the Repair option, then click Next.
When the repair process is finished, click Finish. The RIM Virtual Serial COM port is added to the Device Manager.

Create a USB Dial-Up Networking session in Windows XP.
Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel.

Double click Network Connections.

Click on Create a new connection.

The New Connection Wizard window appears, click the Next button.

Select Connect to the Internet.
Click the Next button.

Select Set up my connection manually.
Click the Next button.

Select the Connect using a dial-up modem.
Click the Next button.

Select USB Cable or Cable Modem for the modem that is being used for the GPRS Connection. Only one device may be selected.
Click the Next button.

Type the name "GPRS" for the connection name.
Click the Next button.

In the Phone number field enter *99#.
NOTE: Phone number can also be entered as *99***1#, or *99***(CID Number)#
NOTE: By default 1 is the CID, but can change.
Click the Next button.

Enter Username: ISP@CINGULARGPRS.COM (ALL CAPS)
Enter Password: CINGULAR1 (ALL CAPS)
Enter Password again in the Confirm box: CINGULAR1 (ALL CAPS)
Uncheck the following boxes; Use this account name and password when anyone connects to the Internet from this computer, Make this the default Internet connection, and Turn on Internet Connection Firewall for this connection.
Click the Next button.

To access this connection quickly from the desktop, tick the box to Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop.
Click the Finish button.

Making the Connection:

Double click on the desktop icon identifying the connection. If not desktop icon was added go to Start, Settings, Network and Dial-up Connections, GPRS.
Enter Username: ISP@CINGULARGPRS.COM (ALL CAPS)
Enter Password: CINGULAR1 (ALL CAPS)
Enter Password again in the Confirm box: CINGULAR1 (ALL CAPS)
Verify that the number to dial is *99# and click dial.
NOTE: Phone number can also be entered as *99***1#, or *99***(CID Number)#
