It was a rejection over Bush's handling of the Iraq war. It was also a rejection of the GOP Congress's abandonment of it's core principles. Those being less gov't, less spending, and more accountability. Lastly, it was an acknowledgement of the GOP Congress's lack of performance on important issues and corruption.
Let me put it succinctly. The Republicans lost this election. The Democrats did not win it. The Dems offered nothing in the way of new or fresh ideas. They were only warm bodies with a "D" in front instead of an "R" when people were ticked off at the GOP.
The majority of Americans are basically conservatives, and when the GOP returns to it's true conservative roots, they will be returned to power.

How can "moderates" "take over" the Republican Party when there are, now, fewer of them in Congress than before this election?
In case you didn't hear, the least conservative of all Republican Senators was one of the casualties last Tuesday -- Lincoln Chafee. In the House, two of the least conservative Republicans also lost -- Jim Leach and Nancy Johnson. And there were other casualties among the "moderates." Curt Weldon, E. Clay Shaw, Charles Bass and Jeb Bradley were all members of the Republican Main Street Partnership -- the national organization of moderate Republicans.
A crucial part of the reason why social conservatives have become such a dominant force in the Republican Party is because the rank-and-file voters are getting tired of being insulted and disempowered by activist federal judges -- especially the Supreme Court Justices. With Justices on the Supreme Court re-writing the U.S. Constitution, the agenda of the body politic gets changed.

initially Conservative republicans is a much extra precise term than liberal Dems. Seroiusly, the Democrats are much less liberal now than they have been 10 years in the past. They have been given uninterested in dropping elections and moved extra in the direction of the middle, extremely in economics. however the Republicans seem to transforming into to be extra severe. If Rush Limbaugh isn't the top of the GOP then why does he have lots impact on the GOP's judgements? Michael Steele apologized and the listening excursion that Rush insisted be a coaching excursion fell aside. sarcastically Colin Powell is the only Republican i be attentive to of that has stepped on Rushbo's ft and not apologized. Rush builds up Palin and Newt could desire to besides be spoke of as mini-Rush. one concern vocal Republicans insist on pretending is that social subject concerns take priority over what human beings somewhat care approximately. in the event that they did the different Sarah Palin could be out of the photograph. they're transforming into to be extra severe and further alienating moderates. did not the determination of McCain provide some indication that Republicans as a rustic wanted extra moderation than what they have been given with Bush? Insiders declare that McCain wanted Lieberman as vice president. Rove reported there wold be a insurrection on the convention floor and insisted on Romney. The compromise became into the wild card of Palin, which inspired the social conservative base yet alienated the economic conservatives and moderates. i wish that comes off as an honest assessment and not a partisan attack. we want a 2 occasion (or extra) gadget in a healthy democracy and unlesss the GOP turns into extra reasonable we are the two not likely to have tw oparties or that 2nd occasion could desire to alter into Libertarians. Or if Democrats are perceived as too conservative for Liberals the fairway occasion could desire to benefit traction.

No, it seems to me to be the other way around. Many people have pulled away from the Republican Party because they're not conservative enough.
They've lost sight with what got them their majority 12 years ago -- lower taxes, smaller government, tough stances on issues like terrorism and illegal immigration.

Your question reflects alot about your personality. You dont so much care about moderation as you do about bashing a group that you have been taught to hate.
