Call him or go see him ,tell him that he has been on your mind and that you hope he is coping as well as can be expected. just let him know that if he needs an ear to talk to a shoulder to cry on or a friend to just sit with you can be there for him . You knowing his dad makes you a close friend and a better person to be around when he is low So dont hang back you could be a very large part of his healing .After all this will be one of the hardest times of his life the loss of family is painfull and once again you might be the one that helps him greive in a healthy manner

I would just send a very simple, tasteful note card stating that you are really sorry for his loss. His mind is probably not on affairs of the heart at this very shocking and sad moment in his life. I would think he will look back on your kind thoughts at a later time and it would be up to him to make the next move. When and if he does contact you, just let him know you are there for him..be sincere and warm....that is enough at this time, I think. Best wishes.

When my mum died my friends at the time tried councilling me... strange, i'm not friends with any of them anymore...
Nothing anyone says is gonna help them get over it, maybe just ease the pain. Try not to make it too much of your business as well, i mean... just remember your not family, your only a friend.
I don't mean to sound bad about what ur trying to do but maybe just watch where you tred.

There is not much you can say really...
The best thing is to just let him know you are there if he needs anything and that you are thinking of him.
