When you think about what we have compared to what our parents, grandparents and great-grandparents had, then yes it is still a good way of living our lives. The problem is we no longer live it. The concept of the American dream was to earn a better way of life through hard work. But instead, we have to give a larger percentage of what we earn to the government so that the "have-nots" can have what we worked for. Dream jobs are scarce these days since the globalization of the economy. We had it all and we let it slip away. Corporate greed replaced ethics and loyalty. Don't get me wrong, there is nowhere else in the world I'd rather be and I am blessed to be American. But, if we don't wake up soon our dream will become a socialistic nightmare. The ever-shrinking middle class will be extinct.

I personally have a different view of my American dream. This guy I work with who is the Sr Accountant is like, 28 or 29, has lots of $$, lives in a subdivision house, has a wife and a baby. He's a pretty cool guy and I go drinking with him on occasion, but I can totally see him in 20 years. He'll be fat and bald, living a boring life with a wife who's getting plastic surgery all the time to stay young so he won't go find a 20 year old to screw. I just look at his life and I think, yeah it would be nice to have money but there's so much more I want out of life. Too bad I'm a small percentage in a sea of Americans who want exactly what he has.

Not really. Actually, we work harder than the most of the world, but we get less than other developed nations. Healthcare is one example. In one Asian country, you can obtain health insurance for $50 a month for 2 seniors. It includes prescription drugs.
Here is the US, no way. Blue Cross won't insure my mother of age of 62 because she has high blood pressure, and minor diabetes, even if we pay $600 per month.
The "American Dream" is in the past. Can you afford a $790,000 house?

I don't know about the American Dream. I've seen many try to get that "American Dream" and they are in Prison...LOL. With all pun aside, I live my own dreams not the American Dream. But then again, reality is a good way for me to live my life. If one has the desire to pursue their dreams? Then go for it. After all, desire is a driving force.

The so called "American Dream" is nothing but a big fat lie. ALMOST as big a lie as freedom of religion in america. NEITHER ONE EXIST. The "american dream" is just a carrot that is dnagled before us to try to motivate us to work harder for things that we don't really want and certainly don't need but feel that they have to have because they are told everyone else hs it or wants it. Until we finally get together and overthrow the whole system and everyone in it, the american people aren't going to have anything.

spend til youdrop! that was the saying from the 60s. and 70s. And now it is borrow so you can live the lifre you want. Guess what. You cannot afford the life you want. You spent your parents inheritance, and will leave your kids sweet nothing but debt. No, the american dream bubble burst, and no one told the credit card companies and they sitll expect you to spend like you were going to die tomorrow.

If you are talking about the 50's 2.5 children, car, garage, small home... then no... this is the modern world... there is more than one American dream out there... you just have to find what you are looking for... and if you soul search and find that this is actually what you want... then good for you, aim for it and take charge to get there. Good luck in life!

Yes. It's something that my parents risked their lives to have a shot at -- they snuck out of Cuba on a makeshift raft.
I think a lot of Americans don't realize all the blessings and opportunities we have, compared to lots of other people in the world.

YES Defiantly
I have lived all over the country and I chose to replant my roots in California.
I was on the east coast for awhile and I would chose west coast in a heart beat. We have spirit and an openness that is joyful.
We have it all, big cities, ocean, motions, farms, deserts, orchards,foothills,.......we have it all.
