please suggest remedies that does not involve any construction work and can be undertaken easily by me

If your horoscope is powerful then you need not bother whether your house is facing south or north. Strictly speaking I don't give much priority to Vaastu!
A small story:
Long long ago once there was a man (rich). He enjoyed his childhood and boyhood lavishly. At his twentieth age his parents died leaving behind vast amount of property. The man got married at the age of 21.
One fine morning, his palace like mansion got damaged due to heavy sudden fire. He lost not only his house but also many properties including gold, gems, money etc in the fire. (There were no banks in those days). At his 22 ages he shifted to a very big house by selling some of his land. He did not get any satisfaction and sold the house for lesser amount...He changed at least 5 houses before his 30th age and faced huge loss in every house.
His property slowly started sinking; he invited many "Vaastu" specialists from the neighboring countries (states) and selected one house and bought the same.... but due to the sudden death of first child, he sold that house again for heavy loss and bought another house! There also he faced problems after problems so he called Pundits, Mantrik, Tantrik and Vaastu specialist and constructed a new own house by selling some of his properties-at the age of 31. With in two months the roof collapsed and his second child died.
He was totally disturbed and become popper because no one was willing to buy his house. He lost everything, however he managed a house on rent………shifting over to that house he lost his at last he became all alone.
He left his native and roamed here and there like a beggar and at last reached a temple and stayed over there for a long time, One day he happened to meet another old man. Both of them exchanged their stories.
The man said-“ I bought more than a dozen of houses during ten years period, but I could not live peacefully even in one house, I lost everything including my children, wife, money, land, cow, elephants, horse… I consulted all the well known astrologers, well known Vaastu person, I did all shaanthi pooja through well versed purohit and Vidhwan but they are all cheat…. astrology is cheat, vaastu is cheat, mantra and tantra all cheat…” he started shouting.
The other old man asked about the planetary position of the man while at his birth …… closed his eyes and calculated something in his heart and laughed at him and said politely, “ my dear, you were born to a big Zamindaar in your previous birth, you were very proud and arrogant then, when some gipsy temporally put up tent for a night stay in one of your wasteland …loosing your temper you burnt their huts without warning them and killed many of them without mercy…some of them powerfully cursed you while dying…so there was no escape for you rather than suffering the punishment…what is the use of blaming astrology and vaastu??? -The old man queried.
If our time is good then we need not worry about the south or north facing of our house and if our time is bad due to some powerful curse due to our previous birth sin then even the east and west will not give us satisfactions. Everything depends upon our past birth Karma…Planetary position in the horoscope revel the degree and the strength of sin committed by us in our previous birth.
Therefore you need not worry… I guess you have the blessings of God.
[I have written this story not to hurt any one individually or collectively]

I life in the north country of Wisconsin and I wish my entrance WAS on the south side. In the winter my north side entrance gets icy and never thaws because the sun can't reach it.
I am afraid I don't understand why you don't like the southern exposure. In wintertime the rooms at the front of your house will be warmed by sunlight coming through the windows.

In Chinese Fengshui, facing South or North is favourable.

Now seriously, I'm sure you're a modern, educated person. Don't believe in silly superstitions... there's absolutely nothing to them!
