Katrina
I have been in the Bar/restaurant business for almost 15 years.
It varies from state to state on the laws concerning this- you should ask your labor board for details in your area. If you are paid directly( if your customers don't pay a cashier) You are more likely to be liable. I know from past experience that if you are Legally responsible for all of your receipts, you have the right to ask for a credit card as a deposit. If your boss doesn't like that he can assume responsibility. Something to think about is if you plan on making a living in the industry - reputation is every thing. I wish I had all the money I lost on walked bar tabs-
I didn't want to get a reputation for a trouble maker- and the money I made from working in the top places made up for the losses- I hope this helps - I know it sucks to loose money when your at work- good luck

Actually it's not illegal for the owner to do that. It's not right, but what's right and legal are not always the same. The owner sets the terms of employment, and you folow them or find another job. Of course, the rules must be clearly stated and applied to all employees. Just like many stores take the money out of your check if the cash register is short (but they sure don't give you any when it's over!)

If your responsible for carrying all your own money. Then your boss could have you pay for it. But, what was the reason they left. Was it a dine and dash? Or was it service issues. If the situation was explained and it truly was not service issues, then your boss should have worked with you. The fact that he didn't do anything at all, makes me question his integrity. You should as well. The big question is if you really want to work for someone who isn't good to you. Ride out the holiday season and I would look for a better job.

No they sure can't! You can't force them to abibe by the law and pay their tab. Even if their reasoning was being pissed at you. If you were doing a poor job then he can certainly fire you if he feels the need, however he cannot take funds from you for it. One, find a new job....two, either eat it and forget about it or talk to a lawyer. You can take him to small claims for that. Good luck!

They can't "make" you pay, but they can fire you. So you have to ask yourself if the amount of money that you owe, is worth looking for and training at another job. And it's probably cheaper to just pay the bill.

That's illegal and ridiculous! How can it be your fault that the table left without paying?
Tell your boss that you refuse to pay,and start looking for another job.

I'm sure that the law varies from state-to-state.
I have recently heard of this "server banking" crap, more and more in Cali.
I don't think it's right, but you really need to know what your state laws are.

They're probably going to try but that doesn't mean it's right. However, it completely depends on the labour laws wherever you live.

No, it's way illegal. But they'll try and do it. If you don't mind risking your job (I didn't when it happened to me), I pushed the issue and absolutely refused to pay.
