Start with a good acoustic guitar. I say good not great. Look to spend about $200 in a decent instrument. If you go less expensive you'll spend more time tuning than practicing and there is a sound difference. If your serious about this you want one that will last and that you can keep for awhile. I would suggest a Takamine G340 dreadnaught. Great guitar. You won't find one of equal quality for below $600 and it only cost $200. Fender, Washburn, Gibson, and Yamaha are also good guitars with a resonable price range. Hope this helps. Peace!

i'd suggest a $30 beginners acoustic guitar and then as soon as that's not entertaining/educational enough, get an electric and an effects pedal with all the basic effects.. if you're rich, get a wah pedal too. play through headphones or low volume through your stereo. if you still have cash, get yourself some kind of amp or PA.
(i don't suggest accoustic/electric as a first guitar... it doesn't do the electric part well... part of the draw of an electric is that the strings are easier to push and the guitar is more forgiving of mistakes (when you turn the gain up)..also, the body of the electric/accoustic picks up sound well so feedback is harder to avoid when amped.... some kind of accoustic for easy access and better practice, and an electric to rock out with, even when you need to be quiet.)
i guess i could add that there is no harm having an electric/accoustic instead of just an accoustic. I just never like plugging those things in.
btw, i had to answer bcause your taste in music is good.
You should check out Guided By Voices. Some of their stuff is pretty rock out. Try the albums Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes and if those are good then check out some of the EP's or the box sets.

Start with an acoustic, it has good, soft-ish strings, and the sound suits classic rock and indie. I use a Yamaha, and it is quite good, i don't think the brand really matters, as long the size suits you and it sounds good. strings can be changed, and should be changed every 6 months for better quality sound. hope you have fun taking up the guitar!

Start out with an acoustic, and begin by learning the basic chords.

start out on acoustic because the strings are closer together than the strings on electric guitars. once you learn how to play it you can play electric guitars with no problem. if you start out with an electric guitar, you will have problems trying to play acoustic because you will be used to the strings being farther apart. i made the wrong choice and started out with electric..now i have problems trying to play acoustic. it doesnt matter which type of guitar you get. i would start out with a cheap one just incase you decide to give up on learning the guitar..that way you wont waste too much money...good luck and i hope it comes easy to you.

definatley start out on acoustic. that way, you don't need to buy an amp and cables, also, when you do start playing electric, it will be alot easier. i recomend Yamaha acoustics. they have relatively low action, they're pretty inexpensive, and they last longer than the $30 Wal Mart guitars.

You always want to start out on an acoustic guitar. Ny guitar is a Greg Bennet. I have had it for about four years. It has held up really well.

Acoustic/Electric is the best. This way your fingers can adapt to the harder kneck and when you switch to electric it will be more comfortable and you can be more efficient. And when you want to get more volume all you have to do is plug in. I reccomend the Ibanez Electric Acoustic guitars. Ibanez is the best company in my opinion. I am a professional guitar instructor with over 40 students currently.

i started on an acoustic. they seem to be lots cheaper then electic guitars. and i think they're easier to learn on. mines an Albanez, but i personally like Ibanez and they arent too expensive. it depends on your price range. my guitar was about $120 on sale. just shop around. i started out on chords and got them down then moved on to tab... which is pretty fun. good luck!

use acoustic-electric so that you can alternate and you shouldn't really worry about that. you should be more concerned whether you should base more on tabs or chords.
if you say chords you're awesome
