My computer doesn't recognize that it has a CD drive. It shows up in My Computer along with a: and c:, but when I click on it, the message says it is not accessible. If I put a CD in the drive, the message displayed asks that I put a CD in the drive. How do I get the CD drive to run?

I looked at the Devise Manager and it shows the following:
DVD/CD-Roms Drive
ATAPI CD-RW 52x Max
IDE DVD-ROM 16x ( there is a small red x over the icon)

WHAT'S WRONG IS THAT THE DEVICE HAS BEEN DISABLED. THAT'S WHAT THE RED X MEANS IN DEVICE MANAGER. GO BACK INTO DEVICE MANAGER AND RIGHT-CLICK THE CD DRIVE AND CLICK PROPERTIES. AFTER THAT WINDOW OPENS, NEAR THE BOTTOM WILL BE A BOX THAT SAYS SOMETHING LIKE "USE" OR "ENABLE" THIS DEVICE. SELECT THE OPTION TO USE OR ENABLE AND CLICK APPLY. THAT IS ALL THAT IS WRONG ACCORDING TO WHAT YOU HAVE SAID, AND FROM MY EXPERIENCE.

I don't think it's a problem with the connection, otherwise it wouldn't display it in My Computer. It's most likely a defect in the CD drive. You also might not have the drivers installed, try running a google/yahoo search for " drivers"

Yeah, it sounds like the CD drive or the cable inside of the computer that connects the CD drive to the motherboard is defective.

first chek the bios settings. if the cd drive is shown in the bios setting then check the 40-pins IDE cables that is attached with the device. if all the above are unable to solve ur problem i am sure that the device needs to be changed.

I had the same problem and got my drive replaced in warranty. But there could be other simple reasons too. I suggest that you contact your manufacturer on phone and ask for suggestions.
The red cross means that it is disabled or uninstalled. right click on it and enable it. Otherwise try reinstalling it.

Sounds like to probably need to buy a new one.
You can find various prices for cd-rom drives here:

The red X, means the driver needs to be reinstalled, or it is the wrong driver.
