Nooooooooo! Nooooooooooooo tropical fish!!! NOO NOO NOO!!! BAD BAD BAD!!!! Goldfish are coldwater and Tropicals are warm water. No bettas, tetras, molliies, OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT!!! I'd suggest the shubunkin to be with comet goldfish and shubunkins and the black moor to be with other fancy goldfish.

I have a large goldfish tank with 8 goldfish. I have Shubunkin, Ryukin, Moors and Oranda goldfish all together. You don't need to seperate them, they don't fight with each other. The problem with goldfish, (while they do put out alot of waste, that isn't the problem that keeps them from living with other fish) is that they need lower temperatures than most fish (they are 'cold' water fish). Optimum temps for goldfish are 58 deg. F to 70 deg. F. Most other fish (tropicals that are sold at stores) require 72 deg. F to 85 deg. F.
I have a group of Siamese Algae Eaters (about 8, another social fish) that lives with my goldfish. They are the only fish I have found that do well in the cold water (I keep my tank at 70 def F.). I have tried several others that were suposed to be compatible, but they all died after a few weeks. Go here to read more about the siamese algae eaters:

White cloud minnows, Some will say zebra danios and guppies can handle temps in the mid 60's but I would just go with the minnows, goldfish may try and eat any fish like that that you add to your tank, something to keep in mind. Koi need a 1000 gallons....you cannot keep a koi in a tank, they must be in a pond. 55 gallons is plenty for 2 comet goldfish.

Cool water fish. Don't get tropicals like tetras, danios, betas, or any other fish that requires warm water. First, make sure you have enough room to add more fish, each goldfish needs 10 gallons to itself. After you ensure this, you can either add additional goldfish of a similar breed, or you can add weather (dojo) loaches. Dojos will get along well with the goldfish and they bond really well to their owners and are an entertaining fish. They are also a useful bottom feeder. Nothing but another of their same species will satisfy any "social" needs your goldfish may have, but it is nice to have more than one fish in an aquarium.

Dojo is a great idea! they help with waste management and are so fun to watch. they are extremely playful and lively and keep the entire tank active. But then, I raise about 600 of them a year to supply to real fish stores (NOT wall-mart but shops that love the fish enough to actually take care of them) they do grow up to 8 inches in length (brown dojo) and can be as small as 4 inches long( gold dojo) they are fun fish. The slime coating on the body protects them from ammonia increases and they like colder water just fine. Now again remember the rules of one inch per gallon and remember that even though the dojo helps in waste management he needs food too.

I guess it depends on the size of the tank. I have a community tank with a gold fish, Black-finned Tetras, a Beta, a Bala Shark, 2 plecotamuses, a dragon fish, guppies, and sword tails. The gold fish hangs out with the Tetras mostly, but sometimes with the Beta.

Most community fish can like tetras and danios, but goldfish make the water Alkaline so you'll have to change it often.
