I am going to be buying a new tank for my 2 goldfish next week. Is there an advantage to a glass tank over a plastic tank?

I have to stay with glass for the simple reason that you can clean it with razor blades "scraping" the solid accumulating calcium or hard water deposits left when some of the water evaporates or some other reason. I have glass tanks that have endured razor scrapings for years with no noticable scratches on them. With the acrylic or plastic you cannot scrape on them to remove hard stains with out leaving instant scratches on the materiel. Glass tanks are heavier than the plastic but i still opt for glass.

I'm not a fan of plastic ( acrylic ) tanks for the reasons of scratching ,algae damage, becoming filmy and blistering. I personally prefer glass. a glass tank is much easier to take care of and with goldfish being real good ammonia producers I would suggest glass.

Acrylic tanks are stronger than glass and are less susceptible to leaks. I had glass tanks for years but I'm happy with a new Eclipse acrylic tank with the complete under the hood filtration system with the bio wheel. Easy to maintain and no outside of the tank filters exposed. Check it out.

Glass tanks can break more easily and cost more but they aren't really better than acrylic. I have two goldfish in a 5 gal acrylic filtered aquarium and they seem very happy and healthy there.

Glass is a bit sturdier from my experience but plastic works just as well. Just remember to buy big and with filters for either. Goldfish are one of the messiest fish around. =)

A glass tank will be clearer and won't be susceptable to scratches.
