Spain is very different from North to South ,East and West.
I enjoyed very much Barcelona, you can see there spectacular form of art, the food is really good and the people very nice.
I went also to Lloret the mar, it was a lot of fun, I enjoyed the night life there espcially when I went to watch flamingo shows.
Madrid was disappointing not offence to anybody. SO from my experience I would suggest Barcelona for sure and all around the coast of Spain.

If you like museums, architecture, wide open squares with fountains, having a drink and a chat with the locals in small pubs in cosy narrow streets, I would suggest Madrid.
If you're willing to risk your life for a spectacular event, go to Pamplona during the bull-run events (poor bulls!)
If you want to hang out at the beach and the nightlife, Costa Brava and Costa del Sol are the tourist areas to be.
If you want to enjoy great natural scenes, go hiking and stay away from the tourists: visit the smaller towns in Baska area, or go to Granada in the south (Alhambra).
Oh, and Barcelona isn't bad either!
Hope this helps.
