FYI... AVG is discontinuing their free product. I run AVG Free now and just got a pop-up reminder the other day. I think the transition to pay-based is Jan 1st but I can't remember.
Too bad, I really liked it. The new version will be $30, not a bad price I guess. I really like AVG because it's not such as big of resource hog as Norton & McAfee.

All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free.
AVG Removes I-Worm/Stration · BackDoor.Generic3.GBB and .GBC · Worm/Generic.FX · Exploit.WMF
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5
Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

AVG all the way ... also in regards to them charging im 99% positive that this is incorrect . yes they are upgradeing and that pop up you got is letting you know that they will no longer be supporting 7.1 and that you should upgrade to 7.5 .. how ever there is a free version of 7.5. this is how they have always done it. i have been useing avg for years and have had to upgrade over time to be supported but i have never had to switch from their free version .. just fyi but i would definately reccomend AVG ive included the link to the download for 7.5

I would recommend AVG or Avast.. but it seems that AVG is turning commercial sometime later.. Sad...
AVG Free: Faster, Less Options, Less through scans, cleaner interface, very good heuristics (Detecting viruses not in database)
Avast Free: Slower, More options, More thorough scans, complicated interface, not very good heuristics...

you get what you pay for - all the antivirus makers have trial versions you can go for years on them - if you have XP and no anti-virus just go through your security center to link to some good trials ( i am using the 6 month PC-cillon and it works better than any free software)

AVG or Avast are the best. goto download.com they are free. If you want to pay then people will say the big ones but they are resource hogs. Avast, AVG best free ones I know of.
