The rat would have to be a favorite of mine as well. They usually bond well enough to ride on your shoulder. They can be trained and are very intelligent animals. They are affectionate and smart, I've had eight rats in my lifetime and each one was one of my best friends.
The only bird I would get I'd have to land a cool grand for. Birds can be so annoying unless they are a Macaw or the like.
Go for a rat- you won't regret it. If you've never owned one before you may have clouded judgments on it. They are nothing like mice or hamsters, nothing like rabbits. They are so so intelligent. If you get it as a baby it will be a little skittish for a week or two, but they warm up quickly and from then on it's a match made in heaven- I promise. Once you get one, I am rather sure you'll have rats for life.

i have to go with the pet rat idea. get one as a baby and let it get to know you as it grows this wont take long--use a small get away cage to begin with to get it used to your work area. then start letting the door open so it can learn by exploring its new surroundings with you near- gradually work up to periods of time when you might be away so it can learn you do come back without thinking it should come looking. i had a female that came when i called her name-she was very smart--rats will not walk off the edge of your table and are relatively clean pets. should be able to share your lunch with your new friend as well. a bird could work if you dont mind it being on a perch

Get one of those nifty micro aquariums. They're really tiny and you can have small fish like guppies. Pretty and peaceful, the filter makes a waterfall sound.
How about a carnivorous plant? There are a few that would love to live on your desk. They are pretty and definitely a conversation starter. Get a Venus Fly Trap. Bonus: it doesn't move.
Hermit crabs are good too. You'd have to get a small aquarium, but a small crab can live in a small one. Like 5 gallons.

Do like the Chinese and get a pet cricket. keep him on your desk in a bamboo cage. I know you want to have something that walks around but it's a desk, not lots of room. A cricket brings good luck and is a great conversation starter. think on it?

try a bird, just remember to get their wings clipped every so often, because they will fly away. Cockatails are cool. We had one and he was fun. just warn people not to wear jewellery because they love shiney objects.or go with a michanical pet. They don't need cleaned up after or fed. Great on the weekends, this way you don't have to run in or have some one come in to feed it. and you don't have a vet bill.

One of those insects scorpions drowned in that epoxy stuff that is see thru. No need to feed. Its dead already! Basically its a ugly fancy paperweight.
2nd idea I approved a pet rock.
Desk is not a good place for pets.
The fish bowl could tip over and ruin your keyboard to the paperwork on your desk. Just plain dumb!

If you get an older male rat, and give him a cozy hide-a-way, they are great pets. I just adopted one a couple weeks ago, and he stays where I put him, for hours on end. As long as he has a hideout to feel safe in.
Other than that, every animal is prone to wandering. I suppose you can have a small set-up for an animal, at your office table, that way the animal is secure & safe, if you need to step away from the table.

try a sand crab in a onbe gallon fish tank or a fish . a fish can get splashing around and get something wet. or flip out unless you have it in a bowl or use a tank cover . have you ever thought of a statue or a furby ?

How about a fish? They are simple to feed and don't jump off your table.
