Lets see, because 85%, I'm being nice, of the US History taught in schools is based on the European conquest of the country. So since "White male history" is what we see the most of, one month out of the year they throw a bone to the Blacks, Women and Hispanics by giving them a showcase month. Of course what gets left off are the contributions made by Asians, Middle Easterners and well, most of the minorities. Go figure.

Well, Latin Punky, I'm "European American" so we are off on the right foot. When the Europeans invaded every continent of the world, they did the best they could to destroy all native culture & knowledge as well. It is their, & our loss, but that is the way is was, and is. Even today , white Americans in particular, seem to think their culture, knowledge, & people are the best there ever will be. Not everyone, but most of us. Whites don't need a History Month because their history has always been taught in their schools.. Most Latinos & Blacks don't know about their own pasts, cultures, or histories because theirs was not taught. So Black History Month was established for blacks to find their roots. In my ignorance, I was not aware of a Latin Heritage celebration, which shows us whites might want to know something about the rich heritage of other cultures such as yours.

Thank you for your question, and letting us know why you asked. I am sure the answers may be more thoughtful because you did. If I'd believed you had been white, I would have been sarcastic. I enjoy laughing at myself at the expense of others like me.

escapegrl1 and NellyPackrat hit it right on the spot. It's considered discriminatory if you celebrate being white or male. It's really messed up. Lots of people are saying that U.S. history only teaches white history, but that's misleading. Until the civil war, the blacks were slaves, and frankly, all they contributed were crops. although, of course, you hear of harriet tubman and other like her. But later in history, past the civil war, even when blacks are still oppressed, you hear of people like Dred Scott and Martin Luther King, Jr., and others. Hispanics didn't move to the U.S. in large numbers till a while before the mid 20th century. You also hear of asians that helped in lots of construction. So, no, U.S. history is not white history. But I agree with you, we should have a white history month.

There is not a white history month because we are all surrounded by white history everyday. American history classes in high school a packed with white history. American history and white history are somewhat synonymous. In regular history books black and Hispanic history is conveniently left out except during the civil war and other small time lines in history.

PERFECT SOLUTION: we should forget about all those heritage months because truly appreciating cultures is an on-going process that should occur every singly freakin day. We shouldn't just have a culture that we "recognize" one month and forget about the next month. So no, we shouldn't have white history month...white encompasses so many ethnicities and cultures..describe to me how we should celebrate the "white culture"...exactly--there is no one "white culture."

Do you think in Latin American countries there is a "hispanic heritage month"? Well, answer my question and think about it.

And stop using the words "white" and "hispanic" as oposite, many hispanics are whites.
