I just started swimming and I recently got my period. I've always used pads, so I don't know what kind of tampons to use. I have moderately heavy periods. I hear OB is better than tampax, is that true?

I always use Playtex tampons. I've tried Tampax, and I think they're horrible. When the tampon is inside you, it expands as it soaks up blood. Tampax are rectangular once they open up. I'm not sure about you, but last time I checked, I wasn't rectangularly shaped down there! Playtex, on the other hand, open up like a flower, which works MUCH better! I haven't ever tried ob, so I can't help you there.

Make sure you read the instructions for using the tampons. One of my friends had no idea how to use a tampon and had a bad experience her first time when her period came and she wasn't packing a pad. Tampons are really easy and so comfortable to use, just make sure you understand how to do it! :)

You can get free samples of different kinds of tampons by going to the manufacturer's site. Here are links:

ob (this is only for Canada, I don't know where you're from):

While you're at it, here's a free sample for Always pads
(that's the kind of pads I always use...ha ha)

and here's a sample of Kotex pads:

Good luck! :) I think it's awesome the companies have free samples, so you can decide for yourself what kind you like!

OB is hard to insert for first-time users.
Tampax is terrible for heavy periods due to the cardboard applicator getting soaked before you're done inserting the tampon.

I use Playtex regularly. For moderately heavy, use the Supers and change between 4 and 7 hours (check to be sure the first time - don't wait till you feel it gushing out).
Playtex is easy to insert and more comfortable than Tampax because it conforms to your shape and rarely leaks (unless it's placed wrong or you wait too long to change it). I don't feel them at all. Tampax is more likely to leak.

I use tampax pearl plastic. They work very well and are easier to insert. I have never had any leak problems or anything with them. They are a little more expensive than others, but are worth it. I have used ob in the past and didn't like them too well.

Good luck!

I tried the La Douce, I liked the easy opening of OB but it leaked few times... I tried sports with it and it was comfy :)

I like tampax sport, as they are good for all kinds of sports including swimming - and not to mention really comfortable.
