Well, it basically depends on luck.
Depending of the kind of spyware, is interest of its programmer to keep the target computer running, to keep colecting information about your navigation habits or simply information about passwords and stuff.
But if is the other kind, it can be real bad... It may slow down your computer by allocating ram memory, rename system files and such....
Some ppl live normally with lots of them in their computers and not evenare noticed...
Well, basically, theresnt how to know how long your computer will work after u take it, but for sure i would not buy anything using a credicard thru your computer...
Good luck

Are you serious? When I am ready to get a new computer or hard drive. I never really have issues where I have to reformat the drive - I just fix the problem and keep it "tuned up". I finally just replaced a drive that I didn't feel I should waste my time with trying to fix the problem since it was a Windows 2000 setup. Guess that means 5 years.

The system I am writing this on is 4 years old, and has never been reformatted. Our Linksys router has both NAT and SPI firewalls, and we are running a ZoneAlarm software firewall and Comodo antivirus. We do regular scans with Ad-Aware and Spybot. I am using Firefox as a browser.

We never turn this computer off, as it is running CommunityTSC to help find a cure for Tuberous Sclerosis.

I am also a computer repairman, but this system has not given me any trouble.

when experimenting with new OS needs to format several times. Nearly 10-15 times a year. If stick with single OS then no need to do anything unless some bad sector or virus get struck, that is very rare case if having antivirus s/w.

Usually not until you get one of those nasty viruses that won;t go away, the you FDISK and reformat your hard drive.
