All the characters are not on an island but actually in a room hooked up to machines testing them. The black smoke comes and gets rid of people when they have reconciled their past and they are ready to move on with their lives. So the black smoke is just a manifestation of the reality they are in. You die on the island, you wake up in this room ala the matrix where something is attached to your brain at the Dharma Headquarters.

probably a radio active mind teaser that the scientists created and unleashed on the people manning the other hatches. It developed a mind of its own and turned on the DARMA folk.
But we probably won't find out until season 10 the way its going.

Of course it's unbelievable because Lost is a Sci-Fi show. I think that it has to do with some Alien, outerspace stuff. I think that there's too many coincidences for it too be random.
