I just recently came out of the closet. The main reason I just couldn't do it before was I felt I couldn't have a normal life. I've always wanted to be married, and just live a happy life with the person I love. Why isn't everyone guaranteed the same rights? Why does it seems like everyone just pretends gay people don't exist and the issue will just go away? This government is built on the foundation of equality. Those with Christian arguments have no real grounds in the political arena (or shouldn't). You can have marriage in any other way you like! (Muslim, Atheist, Buddhist) All legally with the absence of Christian principles. Gay people get married every day, and most of the time it's with someone ordained. I WANT MY CIVIL RIGHTS PEOPLE!

Congrats on coming out!!...Although I totally agree with gay people being allowed to marry, we have to examine the political climate of what we're dealing with. Anytime another group is pushed into a corner they are gonna be on the defensive. This is what's happening with gay marriage. Christians (being riled up by the Republicans) feel it's an attack on the "sanctity" of marriage. I won't even try to get into all the ironies of that statement, but it is in fact how they feel. The gay community feels that a fundamental right is being taken away and so the push for legalized marriage intensifies.

The only solution for this situation is for the gay community to back off for "marriage" and to push for civil unions. Having all the same legal rights, benefits, and legal consequences (divorce) as marriage..but not calling it marriage. This would be a true separation of church and state, it would ease the Christians minds of marriage being on the attack and essentially take away any arguing points on the issue. It would allow the gay community to benefit form what straight people have been enjoying for centuries.

Unfortunately we live in such a political charged atmosphere that such compromises have to made to get a solution. It isn't necessarily right...but it's the best way for us to realistically achieve our goal of legal rights. If the marriage push continues by the gay community it's only going to cause increased tensions and our ability to enjoy equal rights will be a long time away.

I think the main thing is that the question of gay marriage is too simplistic. Christians want to maintain the meaning from which marriage was derived and so they don't want to budge and then the people on the other side want all the legal rights for gay people to be married and they don't want to budge by loosing the term "marriage" I think both sides should compromise with each other. Let gay couples have a legal union with all the benefits of any other married couple and then leave it up to individual churches to decide if they want to support it or not. I know this wont make everyone happy but with issues like that there will have to be a compromise. After all, the results of a successful compromise ends in a conclusion in which all parties involved are still unhappy. Congratulations on coming out and I hope the best for you.

Not all Christians believe that gay marriage is necessarily wrong. Catholicism does not allow birth control but you will notice that many Catholics do use it. I think that it is a very controversial thing among the Christian community. People have a hard time accepting it because it technically says in the bible that marriage is between a man and a woman and is for the purpose of pro-creating. But the problem I have with that is that some heterosexual couples cannot have children. Does that mean that they can't get married because they can't have children? Many gay couples want to have children. I have a friend who is gay and he really wants to have kids. What about adoption? There are so many children out there that need homes and need people to love and support them. Couldn't gay couples do the same thing as heterosexual couples?

I think the problem in this country is that we were founded on christianity and those beliefs. Therefore, marriage was to be between a man and a woman to procreate the earth - the Bible tells us so. A man and a man cannot procreate and a woman and a woman cannot procreate, so christians have a hard time allowing gay marriage since it is believed by them to be for procreating this earth. I understand that you need marriage laws so insurance companies can cover your spouses and for the federal government to acknowledge your marriage for tax reasons, etc. IF those things were not an issue would you still need to marry? 50% of marriages do not last, so if we abolished marriage all together, would you not still love your significant other? Do you really need for a piece of paper issued in a state supported by the federal government to tell you that you LOVE your mate? Do any of us need that piece of paper? I understand why you want to be able to marry, but in the BIG picture is it really necessary? I say we abolish marriage all together! It would certainly free up some judge's dockets and put many attorneys out of business! I hope you get your civil rights!

civil marriage is offensive in general. Marriage should be between loving individuals and private regardless of whether it involves a man & woman, 2 men, 2 women or multiple partners, but government and state should NOT be involved at all. Remove civil marrage and let people execute private marriage contracts that the government cannot interfere with.
In Israel, marriage are handled by the various churches where they are registered in perpetuity. American institutions can easily handle this in a free market manner. Right now the state maintains an unfair monopoly on the practice, preventing private business from competing openly and fairly in such a market.

I really think that the government should honor the rights of gay/lesbain/biosexual people. I really don't care is there are gay or lesbian marriages I believe that everyone deserves to be happy. I believe one of the reasons that people do not honor rights of gay/lesbian is because we live in a society were differences are always negitative. Everyone has such a poor self image that they have to treat people with differences with disrespect. I am totally ashamed to live in a society were the government along with citizens gang up on minority. I hope there is a change.

Marriage is a loving bond and spiritual commitment between two people who love each other, not our government. I'm Gay. If I decide I love some one to tangle up with financially, and any other way, I will find a way. I'm not waiting for Joe Hick Fundie to approve.

I think this whole marriage thing being sacred for only a male and female completely bogus. When I worked in a bindery (making books / printing), when we would merge one component with another we called it "marrying"... Sh*t, if the book and it's cover can get "married", then so can I!!!!

Honey, you're preachin' the the choir here! I'm with ya 110%!

Atheists Legally marry
Rapists Legally Marry
Murderers Legally Marry
Thieves Legally Marry
Inter-racial couples finally won their right to legally marry
Inter-faith couples legally marry

But gays and lesbians? Oh no...that can't happen...

What's ironic is the EXACT same arguments that were used against inter-racial couples legally marrying are being employed against gays/lesbians legally marrying.

It makes no more sense now than it did in the Fifties for inter-racial couples.
One would think, since we say we supposedly live in such an enlightened age, that we'd be able to understand the difference between religious beliefs and legal civil rights! Especially in THIS Country!

Good for you for coming out...that takes alot of courage! I think that people are still afraid of the gay community. People are scared of what they don't understand. I am straight, but I belive in gay marrige whole heartedly. (I am very pro-gay).

The law allows rapists and murderers to get married, yet two loving people of the same sex aren't allowed. I think that is really twisted and wrong. I hope that gay couples will be allowed to legally marry and have all the same benefits as a hetero couple sometime during my life. Hopefully, things will change soon.

Why do people find gay marriage so offensive? Having complete and utter disdain and loathing of another group seems to be quite the ego trip for many heterosexuals.

May they go to the hell that Christians believe in.
