Apes and other animals to have something similar to a period ... sort of, but it's when they're fertile AKA "in heat". If they don't become pregnant, it's not the same as with humans where they have a period. Human women are not fertile during their period.
In olden days ... a very interesting question. I actually have an anthropologist friend who told me about the pre-Colombian (before Columbus) americans of the southwest. They used to strip juniper bark and try to make it sort of soft and use it like a pad. From what I understand, women would rely on cloths and such ... I would hate to do the laundry!

Actually, some apes (I'm pretty sure it's Gorillas) do get periods. They have a regular cycle as well, about 33 days. And, they do bleed. Though not as much as humans, they bleed.
Other animals, such as cats or dogs can be "in heat" if they are not fixed.

I dont think its physically possible for animals to get their periods..lucky females..but in the olden days, they used rags :(

they don't have periods like we do..
dog's and cats and other animals go into heat. which doens't happen that many times a year. once or twice....but depends on the animal..this is when they can get pregnant.

Actually horses, cats and dogs DO bleed when they come into heat. Im not sure about other animals tho...
