On the contrary, anyone who cares for rock, pop, or arguably even country and bluegrass, also cares about jazz.
They just don't know it yet.
Personally I love good jazz, but I don't get into it quite as much as the derivatives I've mentioned.
I must point out that this doesn't include listening to "smooth jazz" stations on the radio. I'd rather listen to Air America. Or throw myself off a cliff. Not in that order, but I live in an area with two smooth jazz stations and no cliffs.

This is a very good question! You have gotten some good answers, but none of them is really definitive. I love jazz.
I think the reason more people don't care about it is jazz musicians don't like to let their creations be packaged in such a way that other people can make money with it. It is not just non-commercial; it is anti-commercial music. Producers and recording companies spend a lot of money promoting other music because they (not necessarily the artists) can make money with it! Jazz artists are too rebellious.

Jazz is an expression of music . Most people don't understand it cause they can't get in touch with there own feelings let alone any one Else. you can't be a cold , selfish person and enjoy jazz. If you ever want to get away from rap or hip-hop ,go to a jazz club the music in there isn't redundant enough for them.

Love it! Jazz is both complex and simple at the same time; it is over most people's heads. Jazz in it's purest form doesn't contain any lyrics and many people can't get into that. Oh and jazz is like fine wine (aged to perfection) but most people drink budweiser - it's simple, plain and the taste fades with time.

I care about Jazz music. I like it a lot. Don't worry Rap and Hip Hop will die down in about 5 to 10 years and then better music will take over.

I think it's a matter of the design of how the mind works.
The typical (popular) mind craves safety and familiarity. Pop songs have a repetitive nature. The mind unconsciously labels it as "familiar and safe". So, in this way, the "hook" is created and clung to by the mind of the listener.
Jazz is outside of the safety zone of the pop hook. When the song is done, without a hook, there is not much to remember it by. So to crave jazz is to crave something that is always new. that's unusual.
