I've experienced it many times. It is a very simple thing though, nothing to do with devils on your back. It's simply the experience of having your mind wake up before your body is able to. This is a very scary feeling because you are unable to move or speak while mentally you are completely awake. The body always catches up in just a few moments and everything is fine. I think it happens to those of us who sleep more soundly than others - a deeper state of relaxation. My wife deals with alot of stress and seldom sleeps well. She has never had the experience.

Did you have sleep paralysis and a nightmare that a dark shadowy figure was on top of you? Next time that happens try clicking your heels together and saying "there is no place like home" I'm totally serious! It is mainly saying the word hooooome that helps dispel the bad feeling. And the reason you click your heels together is because your feet are the easiest part of your body to start waking up. Anytime you are having a bad dream or sleep paralysis, do this and you'll wake up. Also this usually only happens to people when they are not eating well.

According to a story I heard, there was this person who had "dog's eyes" (also known as ying-yang eyes), meaning eyes that can see the spiritual world, that he could see spirits or ghosts sitting on his army buddy who was lying in bed. His army buddy could not get up from the bed until the spirits left him.
Many people might have such experiences . . . . . lying there and seem to be fully awake, conscious of the surroundings, and yet, inexplicably, these people could not get up from the bed. I had one or two such experiences before when I was staying at a certain hostel, and my next door hostel mate related the same incident to me.

I felt this before when I was about 7 years old I was unable to move and speak It was scary I didn't understand it but It didn't harm me ... but now since I'm older I'm starting to believe what if that feeling that I felt me not being able to move was something else trying to tell me something of importance that I needed to know for my own Life journey... Im still trying to understand myself....

It's a euphemism for a nightmare. When the dreamer had an especially bad dream and/or restless night, it was said that the devil used him/her as his steed (horse) for the night.

It's called "sleep paralysis". It's an actual documented event that's probably caused by being half asleep and unable to move. Your brain is random firing and causing you to see and experience things that aren't really there. Something like hallucinations.
