Do you mean RJ-11 wires? Standard phone green/red wire pair? You don't have enough info here to understand the problem. But it does not sound like you have the right cabling. There are USB cables that ISPs will send out with kits that are intended to work with a single computer connected to the modem that does not have an ethernet adapter.

I am assuming this is NOT a dial up connection? If it is then you would use the RJ11 (regular phone line cable) to connect the computer modem to the phone jack in the wall. Make sure you are using the phone moden on your computer and not the ethernet connection by accident (the regular phone line will actually seem to fit in both but the ethernet is wider and you will see tiny gaps on either side wheeas you will not see these gaps while connected to the modem.

You should run an ethernet cable (eight wire) cable from your computer network adapter to a router that is connected to the modem if you want to connect more than one computer to the internet. Both computers connect to the router. there is a WAN port that connects the router to the modem and the modem connects to the incoming service (DSL or Cable). Routers are pretty cheap and easy to install with the installation wizards with them them these days.
