Adding another gb of RAM? (only for computer experts)?

Question

i'm trying to add 1 more gb of RAM to make 3gbs of RAM in to my computer
all 4 sticks of ram (2x 1gb and 2x 512mb) work
they are exactly the same
in everyway, including company, speed, type, and version
my motherboard supports 4gbs
and so does Windows XP Pro
but when i stick in the sticks
my computer won't boot
what is going on?

well i am running the 2gbs right now
but maybe it is the new 512 sticks.
2morrow when i have time, i will try just the 512 sticks.
but for the first guy that posted
i currently am using the same color slots


P.S. just to let you know, i am computer literate, i've been building computers for years now and have upgraded tons of times
it is just that this the first time i've ever tried going past 2gbs of RAM.

not that you are calling me and idiot or watever, i'm just saying that if it is easier for you to use computer terms, i will most likely understand, and don't worry about getting complex on this, that will probably help me more

haha i just want 3gbs of RAM, and yea i am a gamer, and my computer seems to be slowing down.
but yay i upgraded yesturday!
now i have an AMD Opteron 165 (1.8ghz)
instead of a freakin AMD FX-57 (2.8ghz)
the Opty is so much better
i have it running at 2.6ghz and the temps havn't changed from stock yet
and never had to even touch the voltage option
all you overclockers out there, GET THE OPTERON 165 from newegg.com right now for a measly 1 payment of 160 bucks!

eitherway, it is much cheaper than any other dual core that can easily reach 2.8ghz which is the speed of a FX-62, 5000+, and the top speed of a FX-60 on air cooling

ooo, i think i might see the problem.
my latencies are changed right now for overclocking purposes of my old cpu.
so.
i'll change em back
and if that is the problem the first guy who said that gets the 10 points.
if not, then the world of answers is still open

Check motherboard ram configurations, mine is funky...
Usually you have to use a combo of single sided RAM and double sided to ensure stability. Start using DIMM slots 1, then keep adding up until you get your computer back up and running.

Also, check to see if the latency times are the same, sometimes if you get too variable of latency, the system crashes.

Sometimes DIMM 1 + 3 need to be filled before 2 + 4 can be used, so play around with the configurations because even if the slots are filled, the capacitors on the RAM may not be working with each other, so check your motherboard for configurations.

Also, make sure that each stick works, enter one at a time in DIMM 1, changing each after a successful boot.

Make sure your BIOS code is up to date. Fire it up with 2 x 1 GB, that is probably what you used to have. If that doesn't work, one of your 1 GB sticks is bad. If that works, shut down, take those out and fire it up with 2 x 512 MB. If that doesn't work, there is something wrong with one of your 512MB sticks. If that works, put it all back in and try again. Either the mobo really has a 2 GB limit, or you have a bad memory slot.

Make sure you are matching the ram up to the slots they should be in. There are two separate colors. Make sure the two 1gb sticks go into 1 color and the two 512mb sticks go into the other. this should work, but if not it means they just aren't compatible unfortunately.

Test all the sticks first to find out if they r functional. Secondly check whether ur mother board supports the type of combination of ram sticks u intend to use. It is always a good idea to use all the sticks of the same capacity.

If I have been you i could get XP, Vista has to many bugs to get labored out, one million gig of reminiscence is sturdy and a 250 gig not easychronic is a lot, i could take the prompt internet yet i could ask the I.S.P or internet service service to spice up the sign, 2 bars i think of could be iffy, 3 bars is do in a position, wish that helped you and sturdy success.

your mother board gets over loaded and why do you need so much RAM? 1 gb is enough unless your a hard core gamer.

What the hell do you need 3 GB of RAM for? I have 2 GB currently and haven't had the need for half of it yet.

Try it with 2GB first see if it boots up.
