I believe it means talk about how different fossils have shown up in different layers of rock, that show the periods of time different creatures lived at specific ages of the Earth.

This is a great question!
It relates, as one answer says, to the different layers of rock.
Generally, the further down you dig, the older the rock. The Earth began to solidify about 4500-4000 million years ago (give or take a few years) so the oldest rocks are about that old, and contain no fossils. At a certain period in time, about 3500 million years ago, the first recognisable life forms appeared, these are found as small microscopic fossils that look like bacteria in rocks of that time, just above the oldest rocks. The next layer might be about 2500 million years old and coantain organisms which look like single celled animals like amoeba, etc. Then in rocks that are about 600 million years old, there will be animal fossils such as the well known trilobites. At about 250 million years ago, there would be a dramatic change in fossil records as the age of dinosaurs came in, and that's what you will find in rocks of that age. And so on and so on.
