You have to create partition then install windows 98. use partition magic re size the partition until yo get it half the size of the hard drive, that will leave half the drive in un allocated space then create partition in that space and format it FAT32 better for windows 98 then install windows 98. you do all of that if you do not want to loose DATA but if it is OK to loose every thing you delete the partition then partition the hard drive 50 50 and format each partition and install xp on one and 98 on the other.
Good luck

Windows 98 can be a very stable system if well configured.
Well, the 1st thing you need to check is the kind of partition you have.
If its FAT32, ok, but if its NTFS, indeed you will have to use partition magic to convert it... (At least the 1st partition)
The second thing you need is to download windows 98 drivers for your motherboard, at the manufacturer website (www.gigabyte.com.tw in your case).
Also, there will be a small issue at the end, after you have windows 98 installed... it will remove windows xp boot files...
Ill provide some steps to make it easier:

1)Download you motherboard drivers for windows 98 at www.gigabyte.com.tw (You gotta know you motherboards model)

2)Convert your 1st drive letter (C:) to FAT32 file system using partition magic (if its ntfs only, otherwise, not needed)

3)Install windows 98, and CHOOSE TO INSTALL IN A DIFFERENT FOLDER THAN C:\WINDOWS, such as C:\Win98 (Installation program provides this option, "Install in a different folder")

4)Configure, install the downloaded drivers

5)After its done, you will be not be able to boot windows xp due to the fact that its boot information was lost. The easiest way to put it back is to run the windows xp installation (just the beginning of it)
For that, you boot the machine with the window XP installation CD, just as if you would reinstall it, but when it reboots for the 1st time, is time enough to stop, windows xp boot is up again.

6)Reboot, remove the windows xp setup CD and boot normally your windows xp

7)At the windows Xp, go to control panel->System

8)Choose tab "advanced", and then "Start up and recovery"->"settings"

9)click in the button "Edit" (in the side of "To edit the startup options file manually, click Edit.")

10)Go to the last line, and type this:
C:\="Windows 98"

11)Close the window.

After doing this, next time you reboot, a menu with both windows xp and windows 98 options will appear every time the machine boots up.

Good luck

u cannot do that.
win xp is a succeding OS of win 98. windows has downward conmpatibility but not upward.

if at all u have choosen NTFS file format while installing XP then it is impossible to install win98.

if at all if u cherish to have win 98 and win xp then the best way to format ur system totally.( all drives) and install win 98 first and then install winxp over it as new installation on another partition and not as upgrading the old one. then u can have dual OS functioning and u can select the one u choose to work on at the time of booting.

but keep in mind that win xp will not allow u to format the disk on its own. so u need another computer or atleast harddisk with with an os installed init. connect ur disk as a slave and then format the disk. partition it and then proceed with new installation.
while formating chose the file format as fat32 . it NTFS is choosen then again win98 will not install.

best of luck.

but dude! win 98 is outdated and microsoft has stopped development and updating of this OS. even in 2000 is also abondonded by MS. so better dont go for win98 ./ 2000 .
u can have the files executed by just changing the setting of win xp. it has an option for that. u can ask it to execute the file as if in win98/2000.xp is more stable compared to 98/2000.

U cannot do it unless u format ur system, install win98 and then windows xp. While installing windows xp do not choose the option of upgrading the existing os. With bundled o/s this sort operation is not possible.

trust me forget about windows 98 for two reasons.
1. it is out of date.
2. it freezes all of the time.
