Well, he lost fifty years of his life. Being drained of that much energy caused him not to be able to move. Even with the miracle pill, it took him a while to get back to normal.

Other than there being a miracle...the hero "mostly" dies. It causes the viewer to become emotionally attached to the character and their plight. If Westley had died completely, the film would have been pointless.

He started out being mostly dead, couldn't move his arms or legs, couldn't move his head, and could barely talk or move his eyes. The effects of being mostly dead "mostly" wore off just in time for him to bluff his way out of a fight with Prince Humperdink....

It meant he was capable of being saved by a miracle rather than being ready for burial. Billy Crystal and Carol Kane were REALLY funny as Miracle Max and his wife.

Mostly dead is some what alive which means you can shove abellow in his mouth and ask him "What have you got worth living for?" and he can tell you "True Love" and then you can miracle him. If he is all dead then all you hear is "Huuuuuuuuuh."
