He's becoming a man and the reality is that men have to wash up every day in order to be clean and healthy, accepted in society and liked by girls.

Does he get the privilege of refusing showers at home with mom and/or dad? If he doesn't, that's a good rule to bring to your house. Otherwise, and I know it's hard to do start such a policy at age 14, but I don't really see why kids should get a choice in the matter. It ranks up there with meals, curfew, acceptable language etc. Don't do it and you lose privileges.

Give him an option: 1) french bath and he can smell like he fell into a flower pot, 2) sponge bath (even more humiliating if grandma has to supervise that he's being thorough with the pitts), or 3) shower/bathe thoroughly like normal, civilised folk. I wouldn't make too big a deal out of the negative social consequences of not bathing, because he will have plenty of opportunities for negative reinforcement and social complexes in his own experience of adolescence.

I would definetly let him know that he needs to take a shower. It could be a boy thing, but boys that want to be someone, take baths. I would persuade him to take a shower. One way that you could get him to take a shower is to let him get on the computer to see what's been posted about the star(him) If he were to read this now I want him to know this: If you want a girlfriend, then you need to get yourself together. This is serious business. You are suppossed to take a bath or shower EVERYDAY. Hey I'm 14 years old and I take baths. It feels good. Trust me when you have stink underarms, then that will knock anyone out. Please take control of this bad situation. Buy you some deodorant. Take a complete bath, everyday. I don't care if you were born yesterday, every human should bathe everyday. If you start taking baths everyday, then maybe you will have a swarm of girls hanging around the corner waiting for you. Maybe you should try some OLD SPICE deodorant. It will be your best solution.

if he is at your house plainly tell him that under arm odor is offensive and to go wash his armpits-also have him use deodorant. At 14b he should know how to use hygiene one would think but being involved in therapeutic foster care was at first amazed at the number of kids(almost all the boys) just weren't shown or had explained the ways-the body parts that need washing and so on and I id not toleerate smelling them once I'd explained and even got hygiene books that illustrated what to do(figuring the boys would be embarassed by me(female) talking about it to them. and would send them back to the bathroom until no odor. EXplained that I had the right to clean air that I insist on clean air and go clean up.Also told them (for some used this to rebel) that if I smell bad odors makes me unpleasant and not at all in a fun and GIVING Mood. This tactic worked most of the time. Boys will use this form to rebel but at 14 if he goes to school will be ostracised so important that he be made to do proper hygiene. If he does no tell him he smells and not to come around you. May seems harsh but since 14 can't be taken and washed.

Offer him treats, that's what I do to keep my dogs in the shower, No just kidding, this is I will never have kids. You should bring up the fact that many of his hero's clean under their arms because it is a manly thing to do, buy him some deodorant to emphasis this. Good luck

If talking to him doesn't help. Have him talk to a doctor about the importance of hygeine. Teenage years are a time where you need to have responsibilities and very social. Other kids might make fun of him behind his back.

My cousin was this way. His mother got offensive when we told her so we had someone his age tell him to get deodorant. It's effective if it comes from a peer.
