What are the differences between a c neck, a v neck and u neck and what is each neck like to play?...They seem to mention these diff neck shapes often when refering to the 50s, 60s and 70s Fender strats.

The c, v and u are the shapes of the back of the neck.

C shaped necks tend to have a "flat" feel to them and are preferred by many electric players that play lead guitar.

V shaped necks are preferred by those that play a lot of chords and are thicker and "boat hull" shaped. the point of the v, when you reach your thumb around the top of the neck while playing a chord, falls where your thumb meets your hand. Uncomfortable in my opinion, but lotsa people like them. Very common on older acoustic guitars.

U shaped necks are thick and round and meet the fingerboard almost vertically. Think about placing a line across the opening of the u with the line being the surface of the fingerboard, and although a bit exaggerated, thats the idea.

Regardless of the neck shape, the fingerboard of most guitars have a very gentle "radius" across them. Don't confuse the fingerboard with the neck!

Roll on down to you local guitar store and check them out - ask the sales guy to give you the specific neck shape and you were correct about the strat neck profile - it'a all about personal preference. Enjoy the test drives!

you will find this discussed in plenty of forums, just enter guitar neck shapes and playing or something like that, add electric or acoustic. I am not a guitar player so that is all I can offer as an answer.
