Outlander by Diana Gabaldon --- it is very long but fascinating. I did not like the sequels as much as I liked the first one.

It is set in Scotland - perhaps the 1700s. It is an unlikely but riveting love story.

If you are of age, the Outlander novels by Diana Gabaldon are excellent. The Didius Falco mysteries by Lindsey Davis are great too, and humorous. Rosemary Sutcliff writes great fiction, but her books can be hard to find, as many are out of print.
