I'm wondering if it matters whether or not it is upright in the box, or lying on it's side. It's going to be surrounded by a thick layer of soft material all around so it won't be able to really move at all.

Regardless of how you place it in the box, it's going to get flipped all over the place while being shipped. Just make sure that when it's in the box, and taped closed, it doesn't move at all when you shake it. And if you are using peanuts to pack it, make sure the computer has a SEALED wrap around it, because peanuts stir up a lot of static electricity. The safest way to ship it would be, in a double-walled box, with at least 2 inches of padding on every side; and if you can afford it, send it expedited. I.E 2Day or Next Day Air.

It should be fine. Make sure all the card are securely screwed down or whatever, and the hard drive and CD drives. Despite all the padding, it will take some banging around, and you don't want any loose parts banging around inside.

If the computer was properly built, it shouldn't matter.
