The complexity and pervasiveness are well described in La Rochdefoucald's "Maxims" in the rule he has for "Self-Love," perhaps the longest of the Maxims and one so tough it was withdrawn in subsequent editions of this 1665 classic. Let me just say that the conscious mind, speaking in words, is never fully aware of what our subconscious is doing to promote our own self. This means that a manager can never give a comprehensively honest explanation for what he's doing.
