Um... a little more specific and you'll get a better answer, but basically a library loans out various materials to the public. These materials can vary from books to magazines, to CDs or DVDs, newspapers, even comic books and AV equipment. Most libraries recieve some state and local funding to acquire materials for their collections, and major research libraries specialize in owning a large variety of materials on every subject imaginable.

LIbraries are funded by cities or schools. That funding buys books and pays salaries. The library loans books out but if the borrower is late, they charge a minimal fee for that. They also charge for late books. Libraries are run as an educational service for the communities and schools that they are in, they are non profit.
