If it is older, it has a pilot that must be lit. If it is relatively new (w/i the last 7-8 years at least) then it will have an automatic ignition that lights the pilot light when the unit is turned on.

new ones dont even have a pilot light anymore, they have a clicker that starts the fire each time the furnace kicks on to save money
so the answer to your question is no

Wow! What a question...
I can't even begin to imagine a gas heater hooked up to my hot water heater...Bombs away.
Our gas heater has a electric igniter.
