This is a deep question!
I'm in agreement with Mintee mostly, but I don't think the world has to go back to a uniform dress code.
Are we better off ? As a society I'd have to say NO.Advances in technology can be a detriment to society as well as a benefit.Just look at health care: We can solve the complex puzzle of the human Genome, yet can't find a cure for cancer ? Why can't we find a cure for AIDS;yet we can prevent women from getting pregnant, and give men instant virility with just a few pills? Why with advances in technology & computers do we still have a healthcare crisis yet the very same was touted as innovative & cost saving?
Unfortunately, Technology bolsters the ID at the cost of the community.
Personally,I blame 2 things for the decline of society today:
1- Personal GREED
2- Corporations
Corproations by their own definition have no objective other than to grow and breed within itself. It is an entity of itself and cares nothing about anything else;except its own existence.Back in the 70's gov't had ANTITRUST laws that limited corp growth. This was abolished in order for US corps to be able to compete globally. One thing is certain:For good or bad the current business climate will be around for the next 20 years.

I don't think technology is the problem. It's people attitudes to it and society in general. In many ways pre-technology was better only because people had to relate to others. Unfortunately we live in a world dominated by a consumer market, everyone wants everything now and those who cannot afford are being manipulated into buying things they really don't need. I'm not saying that we don't own responsibility for our purchases but we are governed by a world of people that are so convincing that by the time you realise the extent of your debts you are already in a debt cycle. Technology in itself was developed to take the strain out of our lives. We as people have to pinpoint those people & organisations that work out of greed and profit and put a stop to there selfish ways. Technology was ment for everyone and we need to find a way to elimanate our wasteful ways and allow the whole of society to prosper. We all need to sit back and decide not what we want but what it is we truly need. We are running on someone elses time frame, there is a reason they call it the 'rat race'. We need to eliminate stress and I believe with a proper balance of compassion, understanding and technology we could establish a wonderful life.

I was just thinking about this early myself... Think about those born in the early '60's. Even though there were no technologies like cell phones, internet, DVD's etc. Think about the culture, morals etc..
Girls were more modest and chaste. No pre marital sex.. you were thought of as a slut. Girls were chaperoned when dating, they wore modest clothing, only held hands when meeting their date. Boys asked the girls father if they could date.
Blue jeans were considered inappropriate school clothes.
Boys hair had to be cut 1 inch above their collars.
Everyone in your neighborhood new who you were, and the mothers seemed to be able to discipline any of the kids and if they scolded you, you knew you'd get an additional scolding when you got home. Schools spanked you if you got out of line, and you got it from Mom when you got home, and Dad when he got home also.
Meals were prepared from fresh foods, no processed anything. If you went out to eat, it was usually Sunday lunch and that was something special. .. Children respected their adults, police, those in charge... Homosexuality was considered a mental disease.
Fathers knew their place and werent wimps.. They worked hard... Any job was better than none. Garbage collecters got paid more than an office jobs.. You knew everyone in your community and was willing to help no matter what...
Those are the days I wish would return.. With modern technology to help, but in moderation, in the right hands.

Some people just don't take well to change. I think we're alot better off with today's technology.

I'm always curious to see what people will come up with next.

the technology these days--is keeping people from having to leave their house and be personal with people any more.
We can do ANYthing from our house these days--

I wonder if that's what --"the love of the people will wax cold"----means, in the Bible?

Wow, what a scary thought!!! Technology---taking the place of humans "keeping in touch"..
Gosh, we NEED that touch!!
