Hi
There are so many companies that offer GMAT prep courses. Is it worth taking one? Is there a better way to prepare for the test? Do you think that taking a college math course would be beneficial?
Thank you

I couldn't understand the previous answer, so I thought I'd offer my advice:

A Kaplan course can definitely prepare you for the GMAT. While taking a math course may help revive your math skills, there is no point in studying subjects that aren't relevant to the test. What we offer is targeted methods and targeted practice so you work smarter and earn more points. The course will also offer you structured studies so that you never stare at a bunch of books not knowing where to start. Finally, our course offers what we call the Ultimate Practice test: the last test of your course is at an actual prometric center, offering you a 'dress rehearsal' for the big day.
And if, for some reason, your scores don't go up, we'll give you your money back.

As a Kaplan teacher, I may be biased, but I'm convinced that there is no better way to prepare for a standardized exam, and especially not one as complicated as the GMAT.

best of luck!

I hated the GMAT. It's just a stupid test. It doesn't really test you on what you know, it simply tries to trip you up. The GRE was MUCH better. The GMAT is a dumb, stupid test.

Having said that, I studied for about 6 weeks off and on and scored a 730. I never did do a full test, but I did a number of problems (I'm a cheap-asss so I just went to Barnes and Noble and read their books, never bought one).

You DEFINITELY want to study beforehand, not because you'll learn something but because the GMAT tries to trick you and screw you up. Case in point - I scored in the top 97% on the GRE math and have a MS in mechanical engineering from a top 5 engineering school, but only scored in the top 82% on the GMAT because of the way they structure the test (the verbal and essays saved me). Like everything else in the business world, it's all about the bottom line, not figuring out or understanding.

Obviously, I never took a course. I think a course would be great to bring you from a 525 to a 625. Maybe a 575 to a 650. I don't think a course will help you get to a 700 or higher, but maybe it could. If, on the other hand, you go to the bother of taking a few tests and find yourself consistently scoring around 620, it's probably good to take the Kaplan (I liked their book best).

for my area, I in no way even looked at a checklist yet used the Princeton evaluate e book for the Verbal (incorporates the writing area). the way they destroy down your essay is an exceptionally sturdy gadget to artwork on and use. i'm an particularly sturdy author so would desire to have come somewhat better trouble-free to me.
